In 1858, the Rifle Club moved to its current location on Webster Avenue in Upper Arlington. The club continued to meet at the millrace until 1865 when it disbanded because of lack of membership. After that, meetings were held at homes or other public places. In 1902, the Rifle Club merged with another organization called the “Ohio Field Artillery Association” which had been formed in 1899 to promote artillery training and education in Ohio. The new organization merged into the National Rifle Association in 1934.
Upper Arlington, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. It is located just east of the Cuyahoga River and south of downtown Akron. The population was 9,762 as of 2010. Upper Arlington has a diverse history that can be traced back to its early settler days. The community was founded in 1836 and named for General David Brodie, an American Revolutionary War general who served in the northern theater of war. The Brodie family continued to live in Upper Arlington until their death in 1918. In the 1920s, two brothers, Harry and John Brodie, began developing what would become Upper Arlington into a large town with many homes and businesses. They donated land for a public square and built four blocks of commercial buildings on approximately twelve acres near present-day University Circle. John Brodie's son Harry Jr., also followed his father's footsteps and started developing Lower Arlington into one of Ohio's most vibrant communities during the 1950s. He donated over seventy acres to the township for use as open space including portions of today's South Market Street corridor north of Euclid Avenue and west of Eastshore Drive. This unique shopping district remains one of Upper Arlington's most popular areas today. In recent years, development activity has resumed along South Market Street with new construction projects such as One Ford Center (a high-end retail store) being completed within walking distance from many local bars and restaurants as well as developmentsproposed for nearby Wexford Township which would add 2,000 housing units to the mix while preserving much agricultural acreage around Lower Arlington square miles).
