Upper Arlington was founded in 1796 by General James Wilkinson as a small community on the Scioto River. In 1810, Wilkinson donated land to make up what is today Upper Arlington Heights. In 1835, when Ohio became a state, Upper Arlington became one of its first municipalities. The first city hall was built in 1892 and now serves as the centerpiece of Upper Arlington's downtown district. The economy of Upper Arlington has been based principally on agriculture for many years and manufacturing has become more significant recently; however, there are also several minor businesses mixed with service industries in this diverse but growing city. One major industry that continues to be strong in Upper Arlington is healthcare; outpatient surgery center operations have accounted for most job growth here over the past few decades and currently employ about 50% of all workforce within town limits. Other major employers include: two large government agencies (Ohio State Highway Patrol and Lucas County Sheriff’s Department), three large retailers (Target, Walmart, JCPenney), three smaller companies (a cleaning company owned by Walmart and two small manufacturers) as well as five bars/restaurants including four that serve local cuisine only (the flagship restaurant being Pizzeria Bianco). Nearby towns include Middletown to the east-northwest, Uniontown to the south-southwest, Willoughby Township to the southwest and Sharonville to the northwest.

Upper Arlington is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,643 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is located on the Scioto River and it has a humid subtropical climate. The first Europeans to visit Upper Arlington were traders from London in 1675 and 1676. In 1792, George Washington founded what would become Upper Arlington as part of his Mount Vernon estate. At that time it consisted of only a few homes and some farms. One of the early settlers in Upper Arlington was James Hogg, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Scotland. He built the first home in what is now Lower Arlington Township. In 1806, John Chapman purchased land northeast of present-day Upper Arlington from David Whitaker for $2,000. That same year he donated water rights to the township so that people could irrigate their crops using hand pumps instead of horses or wagons drawn by oxen or men. This became known as "Chapman's Canal." By 1812 Lower Arlington had a schoolhouse and 12 residents; by 1814 it had a church and 30 residents. In 1815 Daniel Webster bought 640 acres (248 ha) east of present-day Upper Arlington for $10,000 from Chapman's heirs; this area would later become Delaware Park State Park . Webster formed an agricultural society to promote production among farmers there and made improvements to roads and irrigation systems around the town (today Delaware Park trails run through upper Arlington). In 1817 he donated 1 mile (1 km) north of today's Main Street corner to property owner Elias Howe for use as an village square . In 1830 he donated 5 acres (20 ha) northeast of current day Main Street corner to those same property owners for use as another village square . Between 1840-1850 many homes were built near where Trinity Episcopal Church now stands on Bedford Road between East Market Street and Netherland Avenue (). Today these homes are called "Webster House" or "Hefferty House." It is interesting to note that all but one house on this street date back before 1800 (). Many may have been constructed during Captain Anthony Wayne's Warrantship period (); however no evidence exists supporting this claim beyond conjecture! The first European settlers in Upper Arlington were Frenchmen, who arrived in 1750. They named the town after their home province of Québec. The area was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Wyandot people. In 1813, a group of United States soldiers under General Anthony Wayne discovered coal mines in what is now Upper Arlington and began developing the land. In 1827, it was given to Ohio by Congress as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution.
