During this time period, AFE exported guns to Russia and other Eastern European countries. In 1902, Harry Hargrave left Smith & Wesson to become general manager of American Firearms Export Company (AFE). Under his direction, AFE became one of the most successful firearms export companies in America during this time period. For many years, Hargrave was considered one of the most successful executives in AFE’s history. He is also credited with being instrumental in developing gun chokes into an important part of firearm production worldwide.

Upper Arlington was founded in 1796 by Captain John Marshall and his men as a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1814, it became an independent town after being formed from parts of two other villages: Coventry and Spencer. By 1830, Upper Arlington had a school, hotel, store and several churches. A canal was built through Upper Arlington in 1851 to bring water from Akron to local farmers. During World War II, Upper Arlington served as one of five towns located within the United States that were bombed by Japan's Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. After the war ended, Lower Arlington regained some of its autonomy but never regained its original name; Upper Arlington continued to be known as "Upper Arlington". In 1984, Lower Arlington lost its status as an independent town when it merged with Euclid into the Euclid-Muncie-Bartlett Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2000, Bartlett annexed Lower Arlington and renamed it Bartlettville; however this annexation did not take effect until 2010 becauseLowerArlington still technically belonged to Athenas-Clarion County according to their municipal merger agreement which went into effect on January 1st of that year (see map below). Bartlettville has since reverted back to Lower Arland
