Upper Arlington is an agricultural community located in northeastern Ohio. The population was 9,382 as of the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The community is named for Colonel Robert C. Haines, a U.S. Army officer who fought in the Revolutionary War and later served as a justice on the Ohio Supreme Court. The first permanent settler in Upper Arlington was Captain John Hand, who arrived in 1793. By 1800, there were at least 10 families living hereabouts, most of whom came from Connecticut and New York City. In 1802, General Rogers established a post office at what is now Third Street and Elm Avenue in Upper Arlington; this was followed by another post office at Fifth Street and Vineyard Road (now Elm) in 1806-07. These two posts had no connection with one another and were merely used for convenience reasons because they lay within easy reach of each other by road or water route serving both townships. In 1812-13, Colonel Haines purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of Third Street from Amos Walton for $5 per acre; this land became known as Haines Township (later Unicoi Township). In 1840, Judge David Neely donated 1/4 mile (0 km) bisected by Vineyard Road between First and Second Streets to become Lower Arlington Cemetery which still stands today (). During the mid-19th century additional settlers began arriving from Ohio's rural areas; these people formed the nucleus around which future development would occur at Upper Arlington proper. Many farmers started moving into Lower Arlington to take advantage of its fertile soil while others built homes near where their businesses sat – becoming known as "the early upperaris". By 1870, there were more than 100 residents living on site west of Vineyard Road - all but six of whom lived there until after World War II when many moved away during that time period due to changes brought about by industrialization throughout America (). Upper Arlington (pronounced "upper arlington") is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,595 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is located on the west bank of the Scioto River and bordered by Park Heights to the north, North Royalton to the east, and West Chester to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Upper Arlington were French traders in 1682. A small post office was established in 1793 at what is now Park Heights with a single storey log cabin as its building lot. In 1801, part of Delaware Township was detached from Toledo Township and became Upper Arlington Township. A steamboat landing on the Scioto River made Upper Arlington an important shipping point for goods entering or leaving Ohio during the 19th century. The Landing's wharf extended along State Street for about two miles (3 km). It was also known for its cheese production beginning in 1849; during that time it produced about one-third of all cheese consumed in Ohio. In 1868, Lower Arlington became part of Upper Arlington when it was organized as a township. In 1931, Lower Arlington lost its charter as an independent township due to annexations by other townships within Delaware County; however, lower ArlINGTON continued to be governed by a board of trustees through local government ordinances until 1978 when this authority passed into state control via Chapter 919 of the Ohio General Assembly. As part of this process, many streets and facilities within Lower ArlINGTON were renamed after members of neighboring townships such as North Royalton and Park Heights while others were left unchanged such as State Street which still runs through Lower ArlINGTON today. Today, upperArlington continues to be home to over 10K residents along with plenty of businesses including Six Flags Great Adventure/Museums IMAX theater/theater complex/Dairy Queen wings etc...
