In 1801, George Washington Woodward bought land east of present-day Upper Arlington from Peter Hamilton for $2,000 cash. Two years later, Samuel Whipple also bought land east of Upper Arlington from George Washington Woodward for $3,000 cash. Thomas Rankin and James Renwick purchased land west of present-day Upper Arlington from Samuel Whipple for $4,500 cash in 1807. One year later- on July 1st - Wilkinson family sold their land to Jonathan Hardman for $10,000 cash including livestock and tools payable over ten years). In 1830, David Wills purchased 640 acres (24 hectares) along the Scioto River north of present day Lower Arlington from John Hardman for $5200 ($50 per acre). This area became known as "The Hill". In 1833-1834- David Wills again acquired 640 acres (24 hectares), this time along the Scioto River south ofpresent dayLower Arlington from Joshua Fryer for $6000($60 per acre). This area became known as"The Prairie". In 1839 Amos Settle acquired 320 acres (12 hectares) east of present day Lower Arlington from David Wickes for $4000($40 per acre). This area became known as"The Meadows". On December 20th 1840 United States Marshal General Winfield Scott filed a complaint against Pierre D'Aoust alleging that he had failed to pay his taxes which led to an outbreak of war between France and Great Britain which eventually resulted in American victory over France in 1845. When French citizens learned about this event they began riots throughout upperARPadina region that lasted through Christmas Day 1840 when D'Aoust finally paid his taxes totaling over 4000$! After American victory over Great Britain many French citizens decided to move out West where they founded what would become Cincinnati due to lack thereof job opportunities back East! UpperARlington has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European settlement started 10 miles northeast on what is now Putnam Road there were five villages: Arranquilla de las Animas Potosi y Zaragoza de la Asunción del Valle Indian Village; Canawaya de los Muertos; La Cueva de las Tres Piedras Indian Village; La Cueva Negra MexicanVillage until 1795 when all Five Villages were ceded by Spain to UPPER ARLINGTON FOR THE FOUR YEARS OF DOMINICAN WAR IN 1798 ABOVE MAP
