Upper Arlington, Ohio is a small town located in the Dayton area of Ohio. The population was 9,975 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is part of the Dayton-Middletown-Springfield metropolitan area. Upper Arlington was founded in 1812 as a small settlement on the Scioto River by fur traders from what is now Canada. In 1814, President James K. Polk visited Upper Arlington and recommended to Congress that it be established as a town foruts sake of its strategic location on the main route betweenWashington D.C. and Cincinnati, Ohio. The town's name was chosen in honor of George Washington by an vote of residents in 1816. In 1870, Lower Arlington became a separate village and annexed by Upper Arlington; however, Lower Arlington retained some vestiges of its independent character until 1925 when it merged with Upper Arlington proper to form one municipality. The Village buildings were replaced by new ones in 1927 following an arson attack which destroyed most of the Village buildings including jail, schoolhouse and library - leaving only three buildings standing today: Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church (1927), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1875) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1927). Upper Arlington, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,567 at the 2000 census. Upper Arlington is located on the banks of the Scioto River and is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. It lies just east of downtown Columbus and north of Heathrow Airport. The first settler in what is now Upper Arlington was John Cook in 1792. Cook sold his land to George Washington and others in 1801 for $10,000 cash. In 1811 Timothy Pickens purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) of what would become Upper Arlington from George Washington for $4 per acre ($0.50 per square kilometer). Pickens named his tract "Upper Arlington" because he thought that it would be more advantageous to build on high ground than near the river's current position. He also intended to use Lower Arlington as a trading post between Upper Arlington and other parts of Ohio. In 1830 Solomon Gregg bought 3/8 mile (1 km) of what became Upper Arlington from Pickens for $3 per acre ($0.25 per square kilometer). Gregg began construction on a sawmill and gristmill at this location which were completed in 1831-32. He also built a log cabin as an inn and storeroom on land adjacent to his mill site which he called "The Old Mill". It was during this time that Lower Arlington also developed into a small town with several stores, two churches, three schools, two residences, one doctor's office and one jail until it was fully annexed by Upper Arlington in 1868 when its population reached 513 people
Upper Arlington was founded in 1793 by John Adams and his wife, Abigail. The town was named after the Upper Arlington plantation on the Scioto River. In 1812, Upper Arlington became part of the Township of Athens. In 1837, Athens incorporated as a village and renamed itself Upper Arlington. In 1892, Lower Arlington merged with Upper Arlington to form the current municipality.
