Twinsburg is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Hamilton County by population. It is located on the east bank of the Maumee River, just south of Dayton. The area that would become Twinsburg was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 after a journey from Miami Township to purchase land along the river for $2 per acre (0.20 pesos per square meter). A post office called Twinsburg was established in 1812, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1814, Nathaniel Banks founded what became Dayton as a village on this site. Dayton was named after John Dayton, an investor who purchased land on which the town would stand. When Ohio became a state in 1803, Dayton became its capital city and Banks continued to operate his business here until his death in 1836. They were the first white men to settle in what is now Ohio County. In 1814, they built the first schoolhouse in Ohio County. The community experienced some growth during the 1830s and 1840s because of its location on the main road between Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 1846, it became a town when it merged with neighboring Whitehall Township. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Twinburg supported Confederate forces while Whitehall Township did not participate. Afterward, both townships recombined into one single township under new management until 1919 when they separated again as part of an effort to promote racial diversity within their borders. Today, Twinburg retains a strong sense of community spirit and is home to a number of businesses including three hospitals and four churches; as well as several recreational opportunities such as golf courses and state parks. It also has a growing reputation for its arts scene which includes several museums and galleries as well as several professional athletes who have played or continue to play in nearby stadiums such as FirstEnergy Stadium and University Park).
Twinsburg was founded in 1810 by John and Hannah Stephenson. The town was named for the twin brothers who developed it. In 1818, the Stephenson family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Twinburg became a part of that city. In 1853, the Stephenson family sold their share of Twinburg to Elijah Hawley. Hawley renamed the town Hawleystown after himself.
