In 1821, Colonel James Ketchum claimed part of what is now Monroe Township when he bought 3/8 mile (1 kilometer) east of where current Uniontown stands from Chief Wahoo Omah (or Omahee). When Ketchum died in 1828 his heirs sold their interest to Captain David Dickson for $800 cash plus expenses incurred in developing it as a township including milling flour from jute seeds brought overland by pioneers on their journey westward.. Dickson named his new township for himself – David Dickson Township – after himself and founded its first post office on July 1, 1830 This development initiated what would become Troy’s heavy industrial base with farming continuing until about 1930 when textiles became a major industry employing many people today including many exporters to China..
