Troy, Ohio is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Holmes County, Ohio. The population was 2,547 at the 2010 census. Troy was founded in 1813 by James Armstrong and his son-in-law John Eaton. The first settler in Troy was George Leary. In 1814, the United States government granted land to James Armstrong and others in what is now Troy on the condition that they build a schoolhouse there. The town's first public school opened in 1816. The townsite changed hands several times until it became part of Lucas County in 1836. As part of the border adjustment act of 1951, Stonington Township (to the east) ceded land to Troy with a promise that it would never become part of Lucas County again than annexation by Toledo within ten years. In 1959, when Toledo annexed Stonington Township without taking into account Troy's wishes, Mayor Arthur Fenton declared that "Troy has always been an inseparable part of this city" and so erected a plaque at City Hall memorializing the annexation. In 2000, following approval from local officials and residents, I-75 through downtown Toledo was extended westward for an additional five miles as an expressway bypassing downtown Toledo completely. This project severed ties between Detroit Avenue and Vine Street which had been one continuous street running through Downtown Toledo for over 150 years; I- 75 designation removed all but one block of this once busy thoroughfare from history as well as creating new areas for shopping and dining options on Dearborn Heights Boulevard to the north while also eliminating any potential traffic congestion near I- 75 southbound exit ramps off Vine Street onto Woodward Avenue which have resulted in increased foot traffic on these two streets during rush hour times since 10:00am peak periods combined!
Troy was founded by the Ohio Company in 1795. It became a town in 1801 and was named for General James Troy, who fought in the American Revolution. The company built a mill here in 1810 and also erected a courthouse and jail. In 1814, the town became an independent village, and in 1836 it merged with neighboring Uniontown to become Troy-Uniontown Township.
