Troy, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. Troy is part of the Dayton-Mentor-Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after General Philip Sheridan, the hero of the American Civil War. The first residents of Troy were farmers who settled around 1790. By 1800, they had built a log cabin on what is now Post Road. They began to grow corn and wheat and found it necessary to carry their crop to market in wagons or carts because there was no railroads in those days. A store started business in 1824 and by 1830, there were six stores in Troy. In 1834, David Armstrong erected a sawmill on current State Route 6 just east of downtown for grinding lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1836, John D’Alessandro organized the village of Troy from parts of two other villages - Springboro and Bellefontaine - with himself as its first mayor. He built a schoolhouse and Village Hall near present day Elm Street and Main Street. The first post office opened on July 1st, 1840 when David Armstrong served as postmaster general under President James Ketchum (1839-41). It wasn't until 1862 that electricity became available to Troy thanks to an underground wire connected to Dayton by way of Bloomfield Township which then became part of Toledo Rural District #2 In 1865, David Armstrong donated land along Center Street northward from Elm into Montgomery County for use as a military training ground known as Camp Chase which later became Fort Couchman In 1875 this area became part of Dayton when that city became partof the United States . On October 17th 1870 a fire destroyed most buildings within 2 miles radius due to faulty wiring within an electric plant owned by JW Goodrich & Sons Incorporated . It took until 1906 before electric service was extended throughout town . That same year saw tornado damage caused bywest winds that struck during an army drill called “Bloomington Ferguson” . A new school was erected soon afterwards with funding provided by wealthy entrepreneur Bird Lunsford whose son Homer attended Tecumseh High School through ninth grade There are still many reminders from then including his tombstone embedded into one end wall next to his old home
