Many factories closed down due to competition from imported products as well as technological advances brought about by automation; however, some companies such as GE continued to operate until they went bankrupt around 2000. The first settlers in Trotwood were James Denton and his family who arrived in 1792. They built a cabin on the present-day site of the City Hall building in 1801. From this time until 1912, Trotwood was known as "Denton Township." In 1912, it became part of Lorain County and was renamed Trotwood. The current name comes from a donation by Mrs. John A. Trotwood to make her home town open to all citizens regardless of race or religion (the motto being "Equality and Openness"). Today, Trotwood is one of the most vibrant cities in central Ohio with an active downtown business district that includes several banks and two dozen restaurants/cafés; Over $100 million has been invested over the years in new businesses - making it one of Greater Cleveland's top economic engines! Trotwood was a village in Jackson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,435 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown–Warren–Boardman, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1837 and named for Reverend James Trotwood (1795-1887), an Englishman who had come to America to preach the gospel. Trotwood's mission station was located on a small stream called "Trotwood" about two miles east of present-day Trotwood Village. The first church building in Trotwood was built in 1839 and served as the original home of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Youngstown. In 1851, the Methodists switched their affiliation from Congregationalism to Baptistism and built a new church on High Street which they still use today. On July 10, 1875, Trotwood organized as a town under the auspices of the Ohio General Assembly. On November 17, 1907 it became a city under proclamation by President William McKinley with its own mayor and council members. On December 5, 1912 it merged with Warren Township to form Warren City Township which continued until 1973 when it merged back into Youngstown Township again. In 1995, following enactment of Ohio Revised Code chapter 453 ("The Safe Streets Law"), trottowns throughout Clay County were ordered closed due to then-current Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) campaign guidelines that required all schools within 1/2 mile of any public high school or middle school must offer DARE classes for students grades 6 through 12 along with other related programs such as health promotion and nutrition education free from charge to all residents who attend these schools during regular academic hours (5:00p - 11:00a). At that time only Youngstown City Township still offered DARE courses outside of normal school hours; all other township townships closed their doors on October 15th 1995 pursuant to state law which stated "No person shall open any door or window except for purposes necessary for proper attendance at school."
