From early colonial days, Trotwood was a place of gunpowder and battle. After the Revolution, guns began to play an important role in Ohio’s defense, and Trotwood became one of the most important sites for shooting such firearms. The town had its own arsenal by 1812, and by 1865 it boasted twenty-one cannons. In 1862 Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Trotwood on his way to Battle Creek, Michigan; while there he decided to hold a review of American forces at the town square. As part of this celebration, he ordered all artillery crews in Trotwood to open fire on a series of large white targets meant as “a lesson in honor to our troops who were serving with distinction” (Schafer). The first target was a two-story wooden building known as the White House. It was hit six times, sending shrapnel flying in all directions. Next came a cannonball that smashed through the window of the schoolhouse next door; inside were five children waiting for their teacher’s return from lunch time. Finally, Grant took aim at an apple tree outside the square and sent shot after shot hurtling through the branches into nearby homes before finally taking his leave. The simultaneous sound of firing across town could be heard for miles; it is said that even General Ulysses S., Jr., who wasn’t present at Battle Creek but saw what happened over his horseback ride home thought it sounded like “the death rattle of some great army” (Goudreau). That same year Trotwood also hosted another major event when Ohio Governor George Romney met with President Abraham Lincoln near Battle Creek; afterward Romney declared Trotwood “the Arsenal of America” (Hershberger). The name comes from the German word "Trotz", meaning "brave" or "hardy". The first Europeans to visit Trotwood were French traders in 1688. William de la Salle and Samuel de Champlain landed at Portage à Potomac on July 4, 1692, while exploring the Great Lakes region for Spain. They were followed by other European explorers such as John Eliot and David Thomson who also visited Trotwood in 1701-02. British explorer Sir George Monck arrived in Trotwood on October 25, 1705 and built a sawmill there that continues to be used today. American Revolutionary War veteran Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Pickering had his home here during the war. The first stores were established in Trotwood by Edward Cady in 1814 when he opened an store/warehouse on High Street near present day Middlebrook Crossing Shopping Center. A post office was opened in Trotwood on December 3, 1815 under the name of Northwich with Jno. Mifflin as its first postmaster. In 1825 Alfred Myers began operating a gristmill which continued operation until 1903 when it became known as Hendrickson Mill Limited Partnership milling operations ceased due to technological advances within the industry Mills closed their doors permanently around this time many families lost their livelihoods during these difficult times In 1909 James Bickerton started operations at what is now called Bickerton's Department Store downtown which soon became one of Akron's most popular shopping destinations with customers coming from all over Northeast Ohio including Canton, Youngstown and surrounding villages . This business grew quickly into one of largest retailers in town – Youths went out early morning to buy items they could not find at home or at local department stores

After World War II, Trotwood began to decline as new housing developed nearby and jobs moved away. However, recent redevelopment has resurrected much of its former commerce and industry with new retail stores and restaurants opening up along with two hospitals – one specializing in mental health services and one providing general medical care – making it an attractive place to live or work.
Trotwood was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Trotwood and his wife Betsy. It is one of the oldest communities in Northwest Ohio. The town was named for a deep ravine that ran through it. The first settlers were masons, who built their first cabin on the bluff above the ravine in 1792.
