Trotwood is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Trotwood was John Stevens who arrived in 1798. He and his family were among the first to farm the land that now makes up Trotwood. The Stevens family had two children and John took on an additional child with his wife Sarah because there were no other families to take on their son's education. John Stevens died in 1810 and his wife Sarah continued farming until her death in 1814. She raised six children: three boys, one girl, and two girls who attended school together for eight years before splitting apart when they reached adulthood. In 1836, General Nathan Bedford Forrest set out from Chattanooga for what would become what is now Tennessee looking for new territory to claim as a state. He passed through Trotwood on his way south and decided to stop at our town while he was here on his way northward. General Forrest spent three days at our town while stopping at various stores along the way including one run by David Hartsfield which later became known as "Hartsfield's store." Upon leaving our town we gathered around him to listen to what he had to say about how “the good Lord had opened His door” so that he could settle down near them in this beautiful country that lay before him! David Hartsfield worked hard building up business over time- beginning with selling candy bars from a wagon out front until he built himself a store complete with 10 barrels of oil storage capacity inside! By 1860 David Hartsfield had expanded into grocery items such as eggs and bacon along with carriages, wagons, flour sacks (for making paper), saddles, horseshoes etc., becoming one of the leading merchants in Trotwood! When Samuel Morse arrived from Cleveland via Erie Railroad company trip #1 in 1837 he met Hartsfield outside of our store just prior to entering! Samuel Morse started working for David Hartsfield starting as an errand boy when he was just 15 years old! In 1840 Morse received his own office inside of Mr. Hartsfelds store where he continued doing Business operations until 1865 when George Stephenson took over running Mr.Hartzells Store!!! Today you can still find some of Morse' equipment still inside today!! Samuel Morse descendants still live quartered upstairs next door!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trotwood, Ohio was founded in 1812 by James and Deborah Trotwood. The town was named for the large trooping of horses that were common during the time. It wasn't until 1828 that Trotwood became a village. In 1839, the first courthouse was built in Trotwood. The town had six churches by 1865 and one school in 1929.
