Trenton, Ohio is a city in the northeastern corner of Ohio that straddles the border of Pennsylvania and Indiana. The population was 61,542 at the 2010 census, making it the 15th most populous city in Ohio. Trenton was founded by British colonists in 1788 as a town on the east bank of the Monongahela River. It became an important military and commercial center during the War of 1812 and became part of the United States in 1791. In 1800, it was made a state capital. The first gun target to be shot at in Trenton was erected on December 6, 1788 by military officers under General George Washington as part of a Christmas present for their families. The target consisted of three iron posts that were set up at different distances from each other to provide cover for shooters while they fired pistols at imaginary targets hidden behind them. Accurate firing could only be achieved with pistols that had been calibrated for this type of target. A small cannonball can be seen ricocheting off one post after hitting anotherpost about 20 feet away from where it was created On October 9, 1814, Colonel William Beal opened fire on an American fortifications known as Fort Stephenson located near what is now Conshohocken township across from Philadelphia’s University Park neighborhood. This marks one of only two occasions when artillery has been used in warfare outside North America-the other being during Queen Anne’s War against France (1754-1763). Colonel Beal believed that artillery would make quick work of these fortifications which were defended by over 100 riflemen under Commandant John Armstrong commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson The first casualties resulted from excitement caused by shelling going off close range without warning just before dawn on September 10th which destroyed several houses near Fort Stephenson causing no fatalities although some women and children who resided there were also injured In 1815 Captain Joshua Barney expended his ammunition trying unsuccessfully to hit a moving Indian village located about three miles due west along what is now State Route 29 between West Huntingdon Township and South Huntingdon Township Captain Barney recommended replacement rounds for his cannon but Majestic refused because he did not believe either powder or ball could penetrate such heavily constructed defenses : Virginia had become involved in the war years earlier through her protectorate relationship with Britain following France's defeat in Napoleon's Grande Armée

The first European to sight Trenton was Samuel Pierpont in 1795 while exploring the area for a new home for his family. The first post office was established in 1814 and served Indians as well as white settlers. A schoolhouse was built in 1816 and remained in use until 1975 when it burned down. The town site became part of the Village of Trenton annexed by Columbus on December 16, 1974. In 1840, James Satterwhite surveyed and platted what would become Trenton Township. He named it after his old friend and fellow settler from New York City—Trenton Ferry Road (now I-675) being one of his original holdings within the township limits today). Settlers began moving into this area starting around 1845 so that development could take place without interference from the Indian nations who were living on and surrounding the lands at that time.
