UFM became one of America's largest arms production companies. The company manufactured artillery pieces such as tanks and self-propelled guns during World War II. The company ceased operations in 1970 but continued trading under different names until it was sold to National Arms Corporation in 1986.

It grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Scioto and its access to nearby waterways. In 1828, Trenton became a town after it passed an act of Congress which authorized the organization of towns in Ohio. It thrived during the 1830s and 1840s thanks to trade with other states and its location convenient for transportation. By 1850, Trenton had over 1,000 residents and was considered one of the most prosperous villages in Ohio. However, during the American Civil War, Trenton sided with Union forces over Confederate ones. The war killed many people in Trenton, including Mayor James Phelan and majority vote owner Drury & Co., which caused economic decline that lasted until 1870.
