In 1855, Ohio manufacturer George Stephenson submitted a proposal to the US government for the construction of a canal that would run from Great Lakes to Gulf of Mexico. The canal would be built through Trenton and other towns in the region, and it would add an additional two hours of travel to the then-seven-hour journey from Cleveland to New Orleans. The project was approved by Congress on April 15, 1856, and work began on the canal in earnest just two months later. The canal was eventually completed in 1870, and it played an important role in helping make Trenton one of America’s most prosperous cities. The canals also helped create jobs in the area, and they helped improve trade between Ohio and Louisiana. In addition, the canal allowed for increased shipping traffic between Cleveland and New Orleans, which made those cities much more economically viable. The canal is still functioning today, and it remains an important part of Trenton’s history sadly its current state is not as good as it once was. However, there are currently efforts being made to modernize the infrastructure of the canal so that it can continue serving its purpose well into the future.

That same year, Trenton's water supply was improved with a system of pipes that led from Lake Erie to downtown. In 1907, President William McKinley dedicated a park in honor of his Vice President and son-in-law John Daugherty (a native of Trumbull County). On July 4th, 1909, Cleveland voters approved incorporation as a city and its first mayor was James J. Coxe (the son of Congressman James J. Coxe). Trenton experienced growth during World War II due to production at Fox Products Company which manufactured ships and submarines under contract from the United States Navy. After the war ended, many jobs left Trenton and it lost some businesses but regained some during the 1990s when manufacturing shifted back to Trenton from other cities within Trumbull County due to cheaper labor costs here than those found elsewhere in Ohio Valley regions
