In 1815, the first cannon in Trenton were erected. The cannons were a part of the fortifications and they fired some shot which was used to protect the people and property in that town. In 1865, Trenton had a population of over 100,000 people and it was decided by the government to build a new arsenal in order to increase production of munitions. It wasn’t until 1907 that the first machine gun was made in Trenton. After World War I, there was an increase in demand for munitions because of the war effort. So much so that factories were built all around Trenton in order to meet this demand. However, during World War II, there was an increase again due to the Cold War and then again after 9/11 because of America’s involvement in that conflict. Trenton, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio and is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Muncie metropolitan statistical area. The population was 10,423 at the 2010 census, making Trenton one of the most populous towns in that area. It is also one of the more ethnically diverse communities in Greater Cleveland. The first inhabitants of what is now Trenton were Native Americans who occupied the land between the Mentor Creek and Great Miami Rivers before European explorers arrived in search for new lands to explore. In 1795, surveyors from Pennsylvania founded what became Trenton on a tract of land that had been given to them by John D'Arcy McGee. By 1800, when it incorporated as a township, Trenton included parts of five other municipalities: Ashtabula Township (now Ashtabula County), Euclid Township (now Fairfield County), North Canton Township (now Cuyahoga County), South Canton Township (now Woodford County), and Westlake Village (now Medina). In 1814, General George Washington set up a military reservation along Lake Erie called Monroe Heights which served as an encampment for American officers during their stay in Canada during the war with Napoleon Bonaparte. When America achieved its independence from France, Monroe Heights reverted back to British control and was renamed Fort Pitt until its evacuation by American forces during World War I. In 1924, after being merged into Cuyahoga County, Trenton lost much of its commercial significance but has become home to many professional athletes including baseball Hall-of-Famers Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays; basketball players Dick Barnett and Lew Alcindor; track stars Leonard Ellerbe and Carl Lewis; actors William Holden and Robert Mitchum; author Harper Lee; singer Loretta Lynn; former NBA player Rick Majerus; politician Rick Lazio; figure skater Tonya Harding; musician Jay Leno
Trenton was founded in 1795 by the brothers James and John Trenton. It became a city in 1814, after being chosen as the site of Ohio's first government. The city is named for General George Rogers Clark, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as the first governor of Kentucky.
