The Toledo Arsenal, also known as the Armory on the river, was a firearms factory and arsenal located in Toledo, Ohio. It was founded in 1794 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and continued to operate until 1853. The site is now occupied by the University of Toledo. In 1824, George Stephenson built a canal from the river to the city and began to trade goods with Detroit. He needed a place to store his guns, so he decided on what is now the Armory building on Jefferson Street. In 1829, he sold the building to Daniel Dennison for $3,000. The first gunsmith at this location was John Fenton. The Dennisons lived here until 1830 when they moved to Hamilton Township due to construction of the Erie Canal. They returned in 1834 and stayed until their death in 1840. Their son Jacob Dennison run this business until it was bought by James McNaught in 1861 who continuing it until 1870 when it passed into ownership of JH Patterson who operated it until 1912 when it became part of Wm Hogg’s company which continued operations till 1915 when it closed down because of prohibition laws Gunstraps National Firearms Museum has been operating at this site since 1916

The city became an important transportation hub during the early 19th century because it was close to both Detroit and Cleveland. Asiana Airlines first served Toledo from Muskegon Heights Airport in 1961 before moving its headquarters to their current home at Portage Park in downtown Toledo in 1992. In 2000, General Motors announced that it would move its global headquarters from Oakland Hills, Michigan to Marysville Township near Lima, Ohio until 2019 but this never happened; instead GM announced plans to build a new campus north of downtown Toledo called "GM Town". In 1963 Ira Glass founded The Home Depot where he remains CEO today along with his wife Holly who has been president since 2006. In 1996 AmocoPhillips merged with Texaco which made nearby Middletown an also large gas station/marketing complex known then as Middletown Independent Petroleum Company (MIPC). This company included service stations Mobil 1 (now ExxonMobil) and ChevronTexaco across town from each other on International Drive until they were bought by Marathon Oil in 2001 for $2 billion making Middletown once again an important commercial center within easy commuting distance for those living within easy driving distance of either major oil refineries or distribution hubs for other industries such as agriculture or manufacturing%. Downtown's eastern edge includes several blocks including State Street which runs along Lake Erie through Midtown providing access both southward into Canada via US-1 (the international border) while eastward into market districts like Easton and Dayton across I-75/State Routes 133 & 131

Toledo, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 153,623 at the 2010 census. The Toledo metropolitan area has a population of 575,567 as of July 1, 2018. The city is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie and was founded in 1796 as a trading post by settlers from Pennsylvania and New York City. It became a major manufacturing center during the 19th century with production of locomotives, cars, clothiers, soap opera scripts and other products sold throughout the Great Lakes region. The first white settler in what is now Toledo was David Wilkinson in 1796. He came from Pennsylvania with his wife Sarah and their children Johnathan (1797-1868), Mary (1799-1868) and Josephine (1800-1869). Wilkinson named his land for George Washington who had been Commander-in-chief of American forces during the War for Independence. As early as 1802, William Watkins built a cabin on what is now Seminary Hill just north of downtown Toledo. In 1803 he bought 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of downtown Toledo from Isaac Brockett for $3 per acre ($40/ha). This land became known as "the Watkins tract." By 1830 there were over 100 families living in Toledo within five miles (8 km) of downtown; by 1840 there were more than 1,000 people living within two miles (3 km)of downtown alone! In 1827 James Kapp purchased 320 acres (100 hectares) northwest of town from Amos Kendall for $5 per acre ($60/ha). That land became known as "Kapp's tract." In 1830 John Coker laid out four blocks east side Street to become what is now Main Street between Springfield Road and Ottawa Avenue; this block would later be called Clinton Boulevard! Mr. Coker also laid out Second Street between State Streets - becoming today's Elmwood Avenue - and Oak Leaf Drive where Ada General Hospital stands today! In 1832 Wm Fenton laid out lots one mile southwestward along Third Street from Mound Road to Indianola Road which became Northwest Front Street today’s Wayne County Courthouse complex – home to both the Superior Court District Attorney’s Office ()and Municipal Court District 2 (). Today’s First Baptist Church building lot can be found on that street corner at its intersection with Northwest FrontStreet . . . In that same year Henry Clay discovered anthracite coal near present day Solon Heights on US 12 about three miles southwest of town on an abandoned farmstead known as “Clay Mines #2″ ..... Anthracite mining continued until 1880 when all surface mines were closed due to lacklapidary resources.. Newcomers arrived during this time including Peter Kuykendall who settled upon property eastside Zion Lutheran Churchyard northofthe present day Hotel Cage building site in 1840.. Remnants remain including an early Methodist church built close to creek bank opposite current day Masonic Temple parking lot across busy Beavercreek Trail next door to old White Settlement Schoolhouse –both structures are still standing despite being extensively damaged by vandals many times over years !! Followed soon after by German immigrants Johann Friedrich Engelsbach & Wilhelm Frischauer who started farming near intersection Township Rd./Beavercreek Rd Nw finest example remains Hausfeldt House well preservedblogspot account ) From these new arrivals sprang up several small businesses such as Farmer Kuykendall’s Carriage Shop (), Blacksmith shop (), JF Engelsbach’s bakery (), etc., until 1865 when market demand caused most business owners to move into larger buildings which continue to stand today including Alumni Hall used by West Chester University law students since 1984 (. Now privately owned!). After several decadesrietching around among various homes until finally finding our current location here we feel content knowing ourrootscontinue tumbling down under us ..... The first permanent European settlers in Toledo were Frenchmen, who arrived in 1614. The area that is now Toledo was part of the Painted Woodland Native American tribe and their leader, Miami of Ohio, negotiated a treaty with Spain in 1564. Spanish settlers began arriving in earnest during the 17th century, and by 1800 there were more than 100 families living in Toledo. In 1813, General James K. Polk ordered Ulysses S. Grant to take control of Mexico City from Santa Anna and march on Mexico City to establish U.S. hegemony over Central America and the Western Hemisphere. Grant sailed up the Essequibo River into present-day Venezuela before moving on downriver to Tecumseh County where he met General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at White Oak Swamp on November 30,1813. The Treaty of Gadsden was signed on December 6 resulting in Mexican independence from Spain and established United States sovereignty over most of South Texas and Chihuahua Territory east of the Rio Grande
