As part of treaty negotiations atarrying at Grosse Pointe (now Detroit), General Wayne agreed to cede land east of Lake Erie to Great Britain in return for military assistance against Ulysses S. Grant's American forces occupation of that region during the war years. In 1815–1816, John Ziegler founded what became known as Ziegler & Co., a commercial printing company which published newspapers throughout much of upper Ohio until 1865 when it merged withotype presses located along Main Street in Cincinnati to become J&J Printing Company Limited (later Owens Corning). One result was that Toledo saw its first periodical publication – a newspaper called "The Gazette" was published weekly beginning November 1st, 1817 from a building on Clark Street within City Hall grounds before moving westward onto State Street where it continued publication until 1800 when it moved again – this time to Second Avenue south across from Buena Vista Square where it remains today as Third Avenue Plaza (formerly South Park Place).
