Toledo is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Toledo Peninsula in northeastern Ohio. The population was 24,351 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Lucas County and has a total area of 21 square miles (55 km2). In 1813, following Tecumseh's victory over American forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers, General Anthony Wayne arrived in Toledo to oversee Indian affairs and survey land for future settlements. Wayne founded Fort Wayne on an island in the river that today forms Trumbull County, Indiana. In 1814, General Winfield Scott ordered Commodore John Denny to establish a protectorate over the mouth of the Maumee River in present-day Erie County as part of his plan to secure control over eastern Michigan from French Canadian settlers. Denny erected Fort Dearborn on an island near what is now downtown Toledo on October 20th, 1814. The first courthouse was built in 1816 on Elmira Street within present-day First Ward Township; it later moved to State Street and become known as Courthouse Square before returning to Elmira Street in 1840. The first jail opened in 1825 on Court House Square just north of where it remains today; it burned down several times but was rebuilt each time with more efficient architecture and became known as Second National Bank Building before becoming conventualized as Storrs Hall In 1830, construction began on additions to both courthouses which would serve as one building until they were destroyed by fire together in 1903 In 1836 territorial governor Daniel Webster appointed Colonel James Wilkinson superintendent of Indian Affairs after commissioners William Harrison Gray and Ebenezer Cooke recommended him for the position Wilkinson established two agencies: One responsible for civil government and education within Indian Territory while another supervised military operations within that territory In 1840 Wilkinson also established a mint at Sandusky Bayou opposite Detroit under guidance of Major George Stephenson After much debate among politicians involved with Washington's decision not to recognize Native American tribes south of Lake Superior (the so-called "Trailof Tears"), Congress approved Creek Chief Cassy Bruce's request for financial aid during their defeat at Battle Of Fallen Timbers four years earlier On November 9th,1846 President Polk signed Proclamation No 1 giving full legal status to all Native nations eastward along “the line running due north from Lake Superior” including traditional leaders such as Chickasaw Nation head Chief Osage Prophet The city experienced rapid growth from its initial population numbering only 50 people when platting began taking place around 1800 through 2200 with claims being made for land grants totaling 640 acres (248 ha) total . Settlement continued apace throughout most or all sections surveyed thereafter although occasional relocations occurred due natural changes such as floods or bad soil conditions . By 1830 there were 8 blocks large or larger scattered throughout town with densities ranging up 10-100 people per block .. settlement density increased rapidly during early 1800s into 1830s especially given lack thereof major infrastructure such as water supply
