There is no one definitive answer to the question of why Toledo, Ohio, has been home to some of the world's most renowned gun target ranges for centuries. Perhaps it is because its location on the Great Lakes makes it an ideal place to practice marksmanship and shoot handguns; or because its strong manufacturing base has helped make Toledo a center for firearms production and sales; or simply because people here love shooting. Whatever the reason, Toledo'sgun target history is nearly legendary. The first known targets were set up at a local quarry in 1827 by two men named John Prentice and Job Coles. The quarry was located just outside of town on what is now Old Orchard Road. From these early beginnings, gun target ranges playing host to various types of firearms were established all over the United States and Canada. In particular, Toledo saw a significant influx of shooters from eastern Europe during World War I, which led to increased demand forTarget range space. Toledo, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 61,898 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Ohio and the fourth-largest in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area after Cleveland, Akron, and Canton. Toledo is known for its art galleries, antique shops, theatres and museums as well as its football teams (the Toledo Rockets) and basketball teams (the Toledo Mud Hens). The first Europeans to visit what is now Toledo were French missionaries in 1601. Jesuit Father Pierre de Montigny discovered Lake Erie's " verify " on July 4th, 1700 while exploring the area; he named it after Saint Vitus because of his warning about an upcoming natural disaster. In 1795, John Fenton established a fur trading post at Battle Creek on CAD$2 per pound ($4 today). On May 2nd of that year, Fenton became charter member of the new United States Congress from Michigan Territory with territorial headquarters at Ottawa Township on Ottawa River opposite Fort Wayne.[1] In 1814–1815 Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark visited present-day Toledo during his exploration of inland Northwest Ohio along what are now I- 71 and I- 77 highways[2] before his march through central Ohio to take possession of land grants from President James K. Polk[3][4]. When General Winfield Scott reached Washington D.C., he referred to Toledo as “our capital” due to its location between New York City and Philadelphia – two important centers of commerce then – but without any practical facilities being available for underlings such as clerks or messengers other than those situated within either city limits! At this time there was only one small store inside downtown [now Civic Center], one banknote printer/publisher (Fenton), one physician/surgeon ([Dr.] Samuel Mathers]), three justice justices ([John P.] Marshall]), four public schools ([ overwhelm all others ], Drs.), two churches ([Apostle Presbyterian], First Congregational), one jail (later reconstructed into State Capitol), six smallpox hospitals ([four])and no means by which men could carry on their business except by horseback or carriage over very rugged country! By 1821 there were nine businesses with a seating capacity of 100 or more customers each! One hundred years later this number had increased to 287 businesses with 1 million square feet (93 hectares) statewide! A tornado touched down near town center on October 25th 1951 causing extensive damage including loss of life among many people who had gathered around electricity poles to watch; however most recoveries have been slow so far.[5] Businesses reopened within weeks following rebuild efforts initiated by local community organizations like Volunteers Against Defamation campaign started after that event led by banker Jay Cuyler Jr.. Heinrich Heine once wrote: " 'Toledo,' my old friend / With quiet streets cleanly swept / And proud old buildings left unaltered / Thy name still sounds sweet:/ So let us never forget thee:/ thou hast given me much tobogganing."[6] When General Motors announced plans in 1956 for a new plant adjacent to Interstate 65 south east of town - giving GM control over southern Lucas County - Mayor James Murchison ordered all public buildings in downtown closed until traffic stopped moving across I-65!!! This was done despite objections from some business owners who saw potential conflicrations with their ability to sell products directly to motorists outside their doors; Murchison’s decision symbolized how important good governance was during these difficult times when decisions affecting both citizens and business must be made collectively instead of just by individuals

The area was originally called Caton's Landing, after General Andrew Caton, who had led an expedition to explore the Great Lakes region in 1696. In 1795, the Treaty of Greenville ended a war between Great Britain and France. As a result of this treaty, much of present-day Ohio became part of British America. In 1803, the United States acquired most of what is now Michigan from France under the terms of the Louisiana Purchase. Toledo grew rapidly as a result of this acquisition and became one of America's leading commercial cities. The city experienced significant growth during both World Wars, including becoming one of America's largest military bases. In recent years, Toledo has undergone several substantial changes, including efforts to make it more pedestrian-friendly and active civic center.
