Gun swivels were first patented in 1847 by George Washington Carleton. They became popularized in the early 1900s, thanks to the development of firearms that allowed for multiple rounds to be fed into a gun through ports on the side of the firearm. The region that now includes Toledo was home to numerous cultures before its first European settlers arrived in the mid-1600s: Algonquian Indians who lived near what is now downtown Toledo for centuries prior to contact with Europeans; Potawatomi Indians who occupied land aroundpresentday Sylvania Township east of downtown until their defeat by French forces during Pontiac's Rebellion in 1795; Shawnee Native Americans who inhabited much or all central Michigan before moving downriver into what is now eastern Wayne County sometime after 1765; Detroit traders who traveled through this area on their way north during early 1800s trade missions with native nations including those encountered by Lewis Cass when he explored northwestern Michigan in 1804:[2][3]and others arriving later during 1810–1815 American expansion through that part of Michigan.[4] By 1837 most northern tribes living along the lower Great Lakes were either extinct or had converted to Christianity,[5] although some still hunted and gathered food.[6][7] A group led by Major John Cavanaugh founded Eastwood Land & Investment Company which purchased large tracts of land eastward from Superior toward present day Waterford City beginning in 1840[8][9][10] but developments began much earlier: Agrarian Society Colonization Society established an estate at Stroudsburg (nowdefunct) sometime between 1796–1800[11], while surveyors laid out platitudes about developing "a town upon high" near what is now downtown at Second Street/Mansfield Avenue soon after 1800[12]; Adam Dutton surveyed lots here northeast corner First Street/Highway 7 about four miles northwest (approximately where Middletown stands today) as early as 1802,[13]: thus laying out what would become Erie Canal Zone’s first settled territory outside British North America—the core region that would eventually become Ohio
The city of Toledo was founded by the Shawnee in 1795. The city became a U.S. town in 1815, and was named for General George Rogers Clark, who had led American forces against the British during the Northwest Indian War. In 1907, Toledo opened its first white high school, which served as a model for many other schools throughout America. The city also became known for its manufacturing industry, including carmakers Ford and GMC; textiles firms J.C. Penney and Sears; and food producers Loews Corp., Pillsbury Co., and General Mills Inc.. In 1995, Toledo lost its status as an important economic center to Detroit due to urban growth in that city. In 2002, however, Toledo regained its place as one of America's most populous cities with the arrival of new waves of Hispanics from Mexico City and El Paso County.
