On November 8, 1814, General James K. Polk was elected the 20th president of the United States. The day after his inauguration, he traveled to Toledo for an inauguration ball and dinner. President Polk's visit to Toledo is significant because it marked the first time that a U.S. president had ever visited the city as part of his official schedule.
