The history of firearms in Toledo, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. Firearms were first used in military conflicts to defend against hostile Indians and other enemies. In 1836, Toledo became the third city in Ohio to establish a city government. The new government needed weapons for defense, so it ordered a shipment of rifles from England. The rifles arrived safe and sound, but the city didn't have any money to buy them with. So, the guns were auctioned off and some ended up being sold to local farmers who put them into use as shotguns and then later as pistols. By 1840, Toledo had a arsenal that held over 100 firearms. Over time, more and more handguns began arriving in Toledo from different parts of the United States. In 1848, when General William Tecumseh Sherman came through town on his march across Ohio during the American Civil War, he purchased two cannons from one of the local arms dealers and brought them back home with him. From that moment forward until 1865 – when Toledo was sacked by Union forces – firearms played an important role in society here in central Ohio!
