Toledo is located on Lake Erie at its eastern edge and has a total area of , making it one of the smallest cities in America by land area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Toledo arrived via an exploratory voyage led by George Washington in 1796. They were looking for a route to Cathay which they knew lay across the Pacific Ocean from Japan. After finding no suitable landing site, they continued their journey home but never returned to this region again until 1803 when Colonel John Crampton founded what would become known as Crampton Township on land he had bought from Chief William Blackwin about 400 yards south of where modern downtown stands today. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne forced his way through Indian resistance and marched into present-day Lucas County with 1,200 men cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel David Silliman to take possession of Creek lands that had been claimed by Spain but not yet ceded to United States control. In order to ensure that these lands would be ceded permanently instead of just given away temporarily like most other areas in this area, Wayne ordered Captain James Wilkinson to survey all possible routes connecting Creek Nation with New York City through what are now downtown Toledo and north central Cleveland (then part of Muskegon Heights). This map became known as "The Wilkinson Map." When General Wayne learned that British Lt.-Colonel Edward Braddock was planning to march against him from Detroit along the Great Lakes he sent word back east asking for help because he did not have any horses or artillery enough to meet Braddock's force head on. On July 14,1815 General Wayne met Brigadier General Hugh Mercer at Mount Perry northeast of present-day Toledo while supplies were being brought upriver from Fort Dearborn under cover of darkness so that Mercer could assess whether or not Braddock was actually attacking him instead of marching toward Canada as planned! It turned out that Braddock wasn't really attacking anyone; he only wanted revenge for being defeated at Battle OF Fallen Timbers two years earlier! However, since both parties were embarrassed by this embarrassment neither side wanted another major confrontation so hostilities between them ended soon thereafter without any further action taken by either side despitestantial casualties on both sides! During World War II much activity took place near Toledo including aircraft manufacturing facilities such as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which produced jets during World War II and also served as an assembly plant for Chrysler products before those plants closed down around 1980s; Ford Motor Company's Bloomfield Assembly Plant built Mustangs there during early 1960s before those plants closed down too; CNES - European Space Agency's Columbus Laboratory used building there until 1990s; Ball State University established their main campus here – first time US university presence outside US Midwest since West Point days; WOODY ALLEN MEMORIAL BUILDING & FOREST PARK - former WW2 bomber/pilot storage hangar/strip mall now offers apartments (and some retail) called "The Forest Park"
