Tiffin, Ohio is a small town in northeastern Ohio. It is the county seat of Trumbull County. As of the 2010 census, Tiffin had a population of 12,890. The name "Tiffin" was given to the town by General David Gregg after his victory at Battle of Gettysburg in 1864. The battle happened near what is now downtown Tiffin. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1796 and 1802. In 1830, a post office was established at Tiffin and it remained in operation until 1906. The first school was built in 1834 and it served students from Tiffin and surrounding towns until 1909 when it became part of the Columbiana School District. After that, the school operated as a neighborhood school until 1955 when it became an all-day kindergarten located on Main Street. In 1865, General David Gregg fought at Battle of Gettysburg and won one of America's greatest military victories when he led Confederate forces against Union troops under George McClellan. After the war ended, General Gregg homesteaded some land near what is now downtown Tiffin and named his new settlement "Tiffin." By 1870, many businesses had been started in Tiffin including grocery stores (owned by A & P), laundry business (owned by Litton & London), cigar store (owned by Robusto Cigars), oyster house (opened by Augustus Orchardt) and printing press (founded by Elisha Dyer). The railroad arrived in Tiffin with its first train on November 8, 1869 which brought passengers and goods from Cleveland to Trumbull County via Mechanicsville station which was located east of town on State Route 618A. On December 1st 1860 engineer John Sennett laid down track for the Medina Railroad between Cleveland and Akron 297 miles northwest of Toledo along present day US 931/State Route 422 north to reach Trumbull County where duties would be divided between local companies such as Medina Railway Company Ltd., Erie Railroad Co., Toledo Railway Company etc.. Tiffin, Ohio is a small town in the southern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census and 3,717 at the 2016 census. Tiffin is one of five towns in Summit County and is located on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Maumee River. Tiffin was founded in 1810 by General Lewis Cass as a post office named for Thomas Tiffin, an early settler. In 1812, Tiffin became a city under control of Cleveland. However, it reverted to a rural town until 1959 when it became an unincorporated community within Summit County again. As of 2016, there were 3,717 residents living in Tiffin-a population that has grown steadily since 2000-making it one of western Ohio's fastest-growing communities over that time frame. Tiffin was known for its brewing industry until about 1960 when distilleries closed because of competition from easier-to-produce whiskey from other states. However, even after those distilleries closed, local breweries continued to produce beer until 1984 when they switched to craft beers such as Upper Arlington Brewing and North Coast Brewing Company (now Columbus Craft Brewery). Today there are four full-time brewery employees and three part-time employees working at thirteen local microbreweries throughout northwestern Ohio serving area restaurants and liquor stores along with two distribution centers across southwestern Michigan providing distribution to more than eighty counties in northeast Kentucky and southeastern Indiana including several large metro areas such as Cincinnati (the largest customer), Indianapolis (the secondlargest customer), Detroit (largest customer), Cleveland Heights (second largest customer) and Akron/Canton (largest distributor). The commercial fishing industry played a significant role in the economy during much of the 20th century; fish canners used Tiffin as their manufacturing center for products such as tinned salmon pouches and canned seafoods before moving production south to Decatur or Toledo during World War II due to available land on which to set up operations then being developed into housing tracts now considered cultural sites by many people who live thereabouts including some current or former mayors of Toledo Tiffin also had an important military significance beginning in 1812 when Brigadier General Lewis Cass moved his family from Greenville County North Carolina so they could establish themselves east of Cuyahoga Falls following his victory over British forces at Fallen Timbers Creek where he led stratified column against Indian cavalry under Major John Niemeyerrosser on October 15th 1812 In 1814 Colonel Robert Haines established Fort Mifflin just outside present day Tiffin It was not until December 12th 1830 that Twelfth Infantry Regiment Captain Ebenezer Higgins erected log stockades along both banks of Scioto River opposite today's Lower Town Square between what is now Main Street -known then as Market Street -and Washington Avenue -now State Route 62-, effective forest defense against possible incursions by Shawnees into what later became neighboring Trumbull Township . In the early 1800s, Tiffin was a small town in Ohio. It was located on the east side of the state and close to Toledo. The community had a Presbyterian church and a school. In 1822, Tiffin became part of the United States. At that time, it consisted of only about 50 people. By 1830, Tiffin had more than 1,000 residents. The town had an economy based on agriculture and manufacturing. In 1850, Tiffin became a county seat and by 1860 it had over 10,000 residents.
