At that time, Tallmadge had an estimated population of 350 people. In 1830, James Kinsley built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after himself – becoming one of the earliest settlers in the area. He became involved with local politics and served as justice of the peace before moving to Athens Township in 1840. According to historian Drayton McLendon's article "Ohio’s Pioneer Settlers", between 1850 and 1870 there were 1,500 immigrants who settled in Athens Township: Poles, Slovaks, Ruthenians (Ukrainians) and Germans who had fled revolution or persecution back home; Irish Catholic families from County Clare arrived first; Italianate families followed later; among them were brothers Antonio (Antonio) Pappalardo (befriended Cincinnati lawyer John Cranch) and Pietro D'Angelo Pappalardo (born December 12th 1800). From about 1865 onward black Americans began settling permanently in central Ohio following Reconstruction policies introduced after America gained its independence from Great Britain. Many worked their way up through labor gangs organized by men such as David Ladd along with local businessmen such as Nathanial Gist Sr., whose mill produced flour for many Ohio newspapers well into the 20th century
