Tallmadge is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Portage County. The population was 27,812 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous municipality in Portage County and one of two cities in the county. In 1886, when Akron incorporated as a city, Tallmadge was its only town among nine established across Summit County byzoners seeking incorporation into larger communities under the banner "Akron Assemblage". In 1907–08 Lillie Boren served as mayor pro tem while her husband James Morthland served as acting mayor from May 8 to September 10 due to Mayor Edward J. Smith's resignation after being charged with beer sales violations; Boren then won election on November 3 using a plurality system over Republican challenger Harry Hadden Jr.. She continued to serve until her death on October 20, 2008 at age 94 years old following several heart attacks over several years. Her husband had been mayor pro tem from 1907-1910 effective October 9th through September 10th which made him Acting Mayor effective October 13th until his resignation effectiveNovember 3rd due to charges against him regarding Beer Sales Violations "She had high hopes that she could be able to bring about change within City Hall...but like many others before her [she] succumbed to disease." -Lillie Boren

The township was laid out in 1813 and became a part of the Northwest Territory after the United States acquired it from Great Britain. In 1815, Congress created five townships in Ohio—Tallmadge Township included—and Tallmadge became one of them. The population of Tallmadge was only seventy-six people at its peak in 1830 but it grew rapidly due to immigration and manufacturing businesses established there. The first school in what is now Tallmadge Township was built on the corner of West 4th Street and South Fifth Avenue in 1814. In 1870, a post office was started at Tallmadge with J.H. Stephenson as the first mailer. By 1910, the population had grown to 1,500 people and by 1912 it had reached 2,000 people; by 1920 it had reached 3,000 people and by 1930 it had reached 5,000 people.Today’s population of Tallmadge is estimated to be over 10,000 residents who are all natives or have ancestry from Ohio dating back to before 1800; many of these residents also reside in nearby Geauga County where they have their own municipal government which has continued uninterrupted since 1796 despite annexation into neighboring Cleveland County during World War II. The earliest settlers in what is now Tallmadge Township were indentured servants brought over from England by Colonel John Starkweather (1772–1827) who founded Starkweather House near present day Mentor on the Scioto River about two miles northeast of modern day Toledo along what is today Route 11 just east of Interstate 75 (the present-day State Road 901). Other early pioneers were Presbyterian ministers Robert Hargrave (1768–1834), James Prentice (1770–1841), John Cooksey (1800–1871) and Isaac Brockway (1800–1855). When America gained independence from Great Britain on July 4th “4 score years ago” ([July 4], 1776), most Germans living west of Appalachia migrated eastward along routes such as those traveled by Samuel Adams through central Pennsylvania communities such as Lancasterburg and Chambersburg into western New York Territory under British rule including alliance formed between Patriot colonists led by George Washington & Benedict Arnold at Saratoga Springs on October 26th “2nd Day Of November 1777″([October 26]), becoming known as “The Continental Army Migration”([October 26]). Most German settlers arrived during or immediately following Indian Removal Uprisingphaseof American history characterizedbyescalatingviolenceanddestructionofNative villagesandcitiesinOhioduringthe mid 1800s ensuing genocidalcampaignknownastheTrailOf Tears([November 15] – [ December 14]). Some German settlers did settle permanently within present day OH after being permitted entry under provisions made applicable pursuant to Treaty Of Paris[November 23rd].
