Tallmadge is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 41,611 at the 2010 census. It is an affluent suburb of Cleveland. In 1812, John Tallmadge founded the town of Tallmadge on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. He named it for his older brother James Tallmadge (1780-1837), who had served as a captain in the Continental Army and fought against Native Americans in what is now West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The original village included about seventy citizens and had one store and two blacksmiths. In 1821, when western Franklin County was created from parts of Adams and Cuyahoga counties, Tallmadge became part of that township. In 1833, Tallytown got its first road linking it to Cleveland via a bridge over the Scioto River. That year also saw the founding of Carnegie Library in nearby Mentor; today's library building was completed in 1898. In 1840-41, eight more community churches were built: First Baptist Church (now Stroudsburg Village United Methodist) on Euclid Avenue; Second Baptist Church (now Pleasant Ridge Methodist Episcopal) on Delaware Avenue ; Third Presbyterian Church (later First Presbyterian Social Services Chapel) on Washington Boulevard; Fourth Methodist Episcopal Church (later Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran church) on East Side Drive; Fifth Catholic Parish church near Ashtabula Road; and Sixth Lutheran parish church near State Route 812 (now University Circle). The cotton gin began operation in 1845 at North Main Street & High Street by Andrew Mellon Sr., Pittsburgh banker turned American industrialist who later served as President Harry Truman’s Secretary of Commerce during World War II before retiring to become chairman and CEO of Seagram Distillers Incorporated – one of America’s largest wine producers – in 1957. An early settler was George Herriman who arrived about 1800 with his family from England across the Appalachian Mountains into what is now southwest Ohio along present day I-71/US 422/WV 451/. For many years after her death Mrs. Juhlman enjoyed being called "the last great virgin." In 1922 she bequeathed $2500 to help finance education for girls within Franklin Township public school system through scholarship program which continues to this day….. In 1924 Drury bought 1 acre lot adjoining home he lived on until his death….. Tallmadge, Ohio is a town in northwestern Ohio, located in the Scioto Valley. It is the seat of Pickering Township. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. Tallmadge was founded by English farmers who came from nearby Canton in 1796. The first settler to arrive was John White in 1801. The town developed as a small community of farmers and traders until the early 19th century when railroads arrived and transportation became more important. Many of the original buildings still stand today including the Sentinel bank building which housed an early post office and local grocery store, as well as many other historic buildings. In 1875, Tallmadge incorporated as a village under the name of Commerce Township; it reverted to its original name in 1924 after becoming part of Scioto County. At that time, it had a total population of 1,636 residents.
