In the early 1800s, the area around Tallmadge was a frontier community. The land here was first claimed by the Delaware nation in 1715. In 1801, Ohio became a state, and the area around Tallmadge came under its jurisdiction. The post office at Tallmadge was established in 1814, and it remained in operation until 1903. The town of Tallmadge developed as a result of this relationship between Ohio and Delaware. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, wheat, and other crops. By the mid-19th century, however, the economy had changed to one based on manufacturing. Later in that century, another industry began to grow here – gun manufacturing. This took off after America entered World War I because production increased for weapons needed for fighting abroad. During World War II, too, gun manufacture sprang up here because of the needs for munitions during that conflict. Today, there are several businesses that operate within the town of Tallmadge based on their theme or product: grocery stores (including a CVS); auto mechanics; an arts-and-crafts store; metal fabrication shops; plus restaurants and bars with an emphasis on craft beer andfine wines
Tallmadge, Ohio is a small town located in southwestern Ohio. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1814 by General William Tallmadge and his family. It lies on the banks of the Scioto River, northwest of downtown Cincinnati. In 1828, Tallmadge became one of two towns to be created from parts of what were then called Township No. 9 in Hamilton County. In 1892, when Cincinnati annexed all but a tiny part of neighboring Athens Township (now part of Dayton), Tallmadge became an enclave within that city proper. After years of growth and development within its own boundaries, it annexes portions of other municipalities over time- most notably West Chester in 2002-2006 and Fountain Hill in 2007-2009. Today, Tallmadge has a population exceeding 10,000 residents and employs more than 100 people including several dozen firefighters and police officers who serve as village watchdogs and keep an eye on crime rates; they also provide some basic services such as watermain repairs and trash pickups to its constituents. Many things have come about since 1830 when General William Tallmadge first settled down hereabouts: One was not only our Revolutionary War general’s establishment as a frontier outpost but also our lively commercial center with three flour mills (and their associated warehouses) running continuously during that key period; another was repeated waves – via annexation – by larger neighborings until we today are proud citizens “of both worlds” if you will; yet another has been made possible thanks to Interstate 75 which skirts our borders just barely while providing monumental access for goods & people hither & yon without ever infringing on our quality or quantity life hereabouts - much less inconveniencing us thereby! Finally we have been blessed with some truly great leaders through time including Mayor Tom Barrett who brought word back from out there about plans for an addition to campus main library—the result being now this new building completed & herculeanly popular—a credit to all involved whether municipal or otherwise... folks plainly get along famously well here!

Tallmadge was a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1818 by James Tallmadge and his wife Anna Smith. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location on the Scioto River and its proximity to the railroad. In 1876, Tallmadge became the county seat of Mahoning County. The city of Tallmadge was incorporated in 1903 and became an important industrial city in central Ohio. In 1970, Tallmadge's population reached 10,000 residents. Today, it is a rural community with a population of around 710 residents. The history of Tallmadge began with James Tallmadge and Anna Smith who met while working together on a farm near Lima, Ohio. They decided to move to what is now Mahoning County and start a new life there. They named their new town after themselves –tall madges being Scots for "high ground". The first settler in the area was John Smyth who built a cabin near what is now Elmira Road in 1819. By 1830, there were over 20 homes here and businesses had started up including two stores and one blacksmith shop. This growth continued until 1836 when Anna Smith died from yellow fever at age 27 during her vacation following her husband's death from cholera at age 31 just nine months earlier! James took on the extra workday to help support his widow as he had done before when he needed to cover his own expenses too! soon enough another merchant moved into this business district called "the Promenade" along Elmira Road which acted as a gateway into downtown (now known as Third Street). He imported goods direct from Sweden through this store which attracted customers such as abolitionist John Brown who conducted rallies outside this storefront! In 1837-38, local farmers tried unsuccessfully to get permission from General David Silliman to build civilization on land they owned north of where modern day State Route 6 meets Interstate 75 - portions still are located within present day Mahoning County limits today! After some time they obtained building permits but never completed anything because money wasn't available until later when state funds came through for roads etc...James Tallmadge did manage (and still controls) part of present day First National Bank Building at 525 Third St NE which stood until 1978 when it burned down; though popularly claimed as having been arson that same year (!), no physical evidence has ever been found linking anyone directly or indirectly with that fire however it remains suspicious nonetheless... nonetheless an interesting footnote about that building! Anyway back then people worked hand-in-hand like families today so many thanks JT !!! Even if we can't prove it didn't happen... :P This period marked also significant changes for our township - my favorite being incorporation into village form finally effective 3/2/1876 🙂 even though we'd been doing all sort of stuff together since earliest days… lotsa laughs back then 😀 James TallymandGE arrived here early 1800’s looking for better land than what he could find east side [of Lima], so much easier road access & good water resources made him decide upon our Township name
In 1813, the United States acquired the land that would become Tallmadge Township from the British Empire. The town of Tallmadge was founded in what is now the city of Cincinnati on July 4, 1813 by General John Morgan and his men as a military outpost to provide security for trade between Great Britain and its colonies. The first post office in Tallmadge was established on November 15, 1816. Ferdinand de Saussure, a French educator and surveyor who had been sent to Ohio by President James K. Polk in order to map out the western border of the United States, arrived at Tallmadge on October 12, 1827. He recommended that McLean County be formed from parts of Northwest Territory (now Dayton), but this recommendation was not acted upon until after he died in 1830. On March 6, 1840, shortly after Ohio became a state under the new US Constitution, Tallmadge township became part of Mahoning County when it was created from portions of Northwest Territory (now Muskegon Heights). On December 1st of that year, it became part of Lucas County when it was created from parts of Summit County.
