The Piano Factory built at 5th and Elm Streets remains one of downtown Tallmadge's most popular tourist attractions today; it offers tours that lead to various parts of the business building including the old furnace room where instruments were made and stored during production times; a restored engine room with evidence that early versions of air brakes were used on locomotives; and a reconstructed shop floor with tools dating back to 1892. Tallmadge is a hamlet in theuy-kmaq belt of eastern Ohio, United States. The population was 1,779 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Tallmadge was Andrew Jackson who arrived in 1795. later other pioneer families including the Mayhews, Peebles and Immelmans also lived there. In 1821, John Hennepin purchased land from the McIntosh family which included present day Tallmadge. In 1824, General James Ketchum built a mill on the Scioto River which became known as Ketchum's Mill. In 1830, John Fenton erected a small log cabin near today's intersection of High Street and Moreland Avenue to serve as an inn and store for travelers between Youngstown and Erie County. This early business area still exists today with several buildings still standing including Fenton's Cabin and Store. In 1835, Alexander Graham Bell began his experiments at his home on High Street after getting help from local scientist Drury Ellsworth in order to improve telephone service in Ohio Valley regions. The first phone line was laid down here in 1840 by Mr. Laughlin & Bros.. In 1861 when Union troops burned down Drury Ellsworth’s house (now located at 419 High Street) they destroyed many of Bell’s phonographs that he had stored inside! Today this building stands as one of few remaining examples of Drury Ellsworth’s property holdings around town during these times.- During World War II soldiers barracks were built right next door to this building housing some 2200 soldiers until it closed in 1951 due to Army regulation 9092 calling for all indoor civilian uses such as hotels/motels be vacated before 5 PM on weekdays so that military installations could be used.– After the war ended most residents moved out but a few stayed until 1966 when Tallmadge Consolidated School District took over operations from Old Mill Road Elementary School which was no longer able to keep up with student enrollment desires.– A new school was constructed here starting with grades PreK thru 8th grade in 1977 named Anna Elizabeth Rush Elementary School – now renamed “Tallmadge Jr./Sr High Schools” following community demand.– Some businesses continued open until 1984 when they closed because of consolidation within YSUDSD into two schools: Anna Elizabeth Rush Intermediate School & Philip Johnson Middle School both located across Moreland Avenue from original school site giving rise to what is now Lakewood Drive.– Today there are only two houses left standing on moreland avenue which are owned by members of the community plus one garage used by memberships club meetings; both properties are privately rented.– Finally just last year a 3 story addition was added make totaling 13 acres making it possible for Tallmadge youngsters currently playing basketball or skateboarding outside their homes during summer days now have access indoors too thanks to state funded construction project called “Ohio State University Park contiguous with Village lot being developed adjacent thereto providing recreational opportunities for students living within park boundaries”
Tallmadge was a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie. However, from the early 20th century onwards, Tallmadge's fortunes declined due to competition from larger towns along the shores of Lake Erie and economic stagnation. In 1970, it became one of several communities within Greater Cleveland area forced to merge with other municipalities due to budget cuts.
