On November 5, 1868, the Tallmadge Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in Tallmadge Ohio. The club used a hammer to cock the gun and shoot rounds. On October 25, 1870, the first pistol match was held at the home of John Hargrave in downtown Tallmadge. There were only 12 members at this time. In 1872, there was a fire that destroyed part of downtown Tallmadge. However, the club continued to meet and shoot pistols. In 1874-75, they organized a rifle team which won several matches against other clubs. They also made new rifles and handguns for sale to members. On February 6th of 1876, they hosted their first annual meeting which met in the old Masonic Temple on North High Street where they voted to change their name from "Tallmadge Rifle and Pistol Club" to "The NRA". The NRA has been organizing shooting competitions ever since!
Tallmadge is a small town in southern Ohio, located just north of the state's capital, Columbus. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus-Middletown-Wilmington, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest known inhabitants of Tallmadge were the Tohono O'odham Indian tribe, who lived along the Scioto River until 1827. In 1814, General James K. Polk made an unsuccessful attempt to invade Canada through the area and passed through Tallmadge on his way southward. A post office called Tallmadge was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1915. Tallmadge's first settler was John Sweeny, who arrived around 1790 and erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Sweeny later sold land to others and founded a larger settlement that would become known as Tallmadge proper. By 1830, there were dozens of homes and businesses in what are now Downtown Tallmadge and Southside Square areas; by 1840 there were more than 100 residents living hereabouts. During its early years as a village, tall madges (a word meaning "town") functioned primarily as agricultural settlements; however, during the late 1800s growth began to accelerate due to several factors including railroad construction within miles of town; increased manufacturing activity within minutes' drive; influxes of new immigrants from northern Italy and Eastern Europe;and burgeoning tourist industry which drew people from all over central Ohio for enjoyable weeks or months at a time during summertime when temperatures reached into the high 30s degrees F (medium 20s degrees C). An important feature unique to tall madges during this period was their establishment of township government with three elected officials: one magistrate (or headman) responsible for law enforcement; one treasurer/comptroller responsible for finances; and one school superintendent/educator responsible for educating children within township boundaries - something not found elsewhere in central Ohio at that time! In 1860 Township trustees appointed George Hine Superintendent of Schools - an event which signaled significant changes ahead for our community as we transitioned from an agricultural society into one characterized by industrialization and commercialism! A few decades later another major shakeup occurred when David Laughlin became Supervisor effective January 1st 1912 after serving as Assistant Superintendent since 1909! After 10 years he retired effective July 1st 1916 due to ill health but remains enshrined in local history thanks to his contributions! In 1978 Village trustees appointed Fred Grosse Commissioner of Parks & Recreation!! This marked yet another major milestone in our Community’s progressivism – assistant commissioner representation on municipal governing body!!! Today’s Commissioners represent approximately 60% Of Village Population!!!

Tallmadge was founded in 1787 by George Washington and James Caldwell, two of the signers of the United States Constitution. The city and its surrounding rural area were named for General George Washington's Mountmadge plantation near the town. In 1802, Tallmadge became part of the Northwest Territory under Kansas Act. It was organized as a township in 1824. On November 4, 1847, it became a city when it was ratified by the state legislature. The first mayor was John J. Edmunds and the first council consisted of fifteen people. The population grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to increased trade with Canada and other parts of the United States; in 1800, Tallmadge had a population of sixty-five people. However, by 1850, its population had reached one thousand people and it soon began to build up an impressive infrastructure including a public library and two hospitals. In 1860, Mayor John Ahern appointed Augustus Kelley as Collector of Internal Revenue; Kelley developed Tallmadge into one of America's leading cities for revenue collection. By 1870, however, immigration from Europe had slowed down considerably so that there were only fifty-four residents living in Tallmadge when it became an incorporated city; nonetheless, he continued to be mayor until his death in 1889. During World War I (1914-18), Tallmadge played an important role as a munitions plant onthe Ohio River where nearly three million rounds were produced for American tanks and artillery In 1921–22 control over Tallmadge passed from City Hall to the Township Council after Mayor Elisha Wickersham resigned due to health problems
