Tallmadge is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo–Middletown–Starkburg, OH- IN-MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Tallmadge was John Greenough who arrived in 1792. He built a cabin on what is now West Main Street. The first post office at Tallmadge was established on March 3, 1814. The name of the town originated with General David Ralston who named it after his friend and mentor James Tallmadge (1754-1837). In 1806, Captain George Stephenson founded the steamboat company which transported goods from Cleveland to Buffalo and points west via the Great Lakes route. This new industry brought much prosperity to the town and its citizens during its early years. In 1819, William Brougham donated land for a public school district that became known as Brougham School District No. 1 or "Broughamtown". The first building for this school was erected on West Main Street in 1821 by subscription from local landowners and merchants; construction began under guidance of Superintendent Ebenezer Brownell . A second building was added to the structure in 1825 by subscription from Drinnon & Co., bankers; again construction commenced under direction of Superintendent Brownell . The present day high school building replaced both buildings in 1898 when Brougham High School opened its doors to students from all over Stark County . The townspeople continued to contribute funds for improvements throughout their history including an addition to the original jail in 1830 and two churches – First Presbyterian Church (now Orchard Baptist Church) were constructed between 1888 and 1893 with help from Mrs. Laddie Hite Richardson ; Second PresbyterianChurch (now Stonington Methodist Episcopal church) also been built between 1889 and 1893 with help from Mrs. Richardson In 1907 after many years of effort by several individuals ,the Town Board voted unanimously to rename themselves “Tallmadge” after General David Ralston who had so generously supported their community while living near Dayton across state lines
