Sylvania, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. Sylvania is located in the coterminous Athens-Clarke County, and it is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Sylvania was John Morse, who arrived on July 1, 1814. A few months later, he and his family built a cabin on the current site of downtown Sylvania. In 1815, Morse'sson Isaac moved to Sylvania from Canandaigua Township and started a small grocery store there which functioned until 1825 when Isaac's son Amos took over ownership and operated it for 34 years; during that time, he also bought land around downtown for future development. In 1836, Methodist preacher Drury Colburn established a mission station in what would become downtown Sylvania while serving as chaplain to the United States Army during the Mexican War (1846-48). When American forces breached Mexico’s southern border on November 16th of that year with General Winfield Scott’s successful campaign against Mexico City’s Defenestration Act—a move calculated to strengthen American control over central Mexico—the town quickly sprang into life with men flocking from all over to participate in this historic event which marked an important turning point in America’s history. Drury Colburn had prophesied that Sylvania would soon explode into size due to its strategic location – just two miles northwest of where then-Youngstown now stands – between two large military installations: Fort Pitt (now University Circle) and Camp Chase (now part of Greenleaf Heights). And so it proved; within weeks of General Scott’s invasion having occurred, business activities were up by 50%, notching another 500 residents within three months! A new courthouse was erected at Fourth Street and Broadway Avenue in 1847; this building served as both court house and jail until 1907 when voters replaced it with a more modern facility on Market Square after experiencing frequent flooding problems inside their old structure due to rainwater entering through openings in its roofline . In 1850-51 Rev Wm Haddon organized one of America's earliest Congregational churches here having left New England following religious persecution byPuritans at that time; services were first held outdoors before being moved indoors six years later when an opportunity arose for use of some existing school buildings adjacent to Third Street Baptist Church across defendants alley - thus becoming known as First Congregational church & School (later First Presbyterian church). By 1860 however only Gershon Bible Church remained standing west side while Second Congregational synagogue burned down east side & Main Street became home to retail stores including J Fritsch Cigar Store which still exists today despite several conversions back into storefronts over time... In 1896 when Cyrus Kapp founded Kapp Paper Company here - one of many paper companies founded along river routes during 19th century --Harrison closed his sawmill (& associated works), starting what has been called "America's last industrial zephyr."
