Sylvania, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 23,724 at the 2010 census. Sylvania is known for its optical industry including products made by Sylvania Optical Supply Co., a UI-based company that specializes in selling components for telescopes and other optics equipment. The city has also been home to several notable companies in the technology industry such as Intel and ATI. The history of Sylvania's optical industry can be traced back to 1892 when two brothers founded Sylvania Optical Supply Company to sell components used in telescope making. In 1907, Baird & Bacon purchased the company and continued to sell components through their subsidiary Baird-Bacon Optics until 1967 when they sold it to UI Technologies Incorporated. In 1999, UI Technologies merged with AMD (later renamed Advanced Micro Devices) creating one of the largest technology companies in the world. At AMD, Sylvania Optical Supply Co., became part of the new division called "AMD Optics" which continued to sell componentry used in telescopes under its own name until 2006 when it merged into Regal Technology Corporation effective January 1st 2007). Sylvania, Ohio was founded by the Sylvania Company in 1836. It is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population of Sylvania was 6,451 at the 2010 census. The name "Sylvania" is derived from the Shawnee word "sie-lwah", meaning "safe place." The town site was purchased in 1837 by James K. Polk and his wife+ Eliza Bogan Polk after they heard about it from a settler named John Silliman who had come to the area in 1825. On October 9, 1837, Polk sold the land to James K. and Eliza Bogan Polk for $3/acre (approximately $121/km²). In 1840 silica mines were discovered at nearby Sylvania Creek and soon there were three quarries producing quartzite (a type of sandstone), marble, and other minerals. By 1850 over 2 million tons (more than 10 metric tonnes) of coal had been mined in Sylvania County alone! A sawmill that year also became one of the largest in America when it began production on the creek's navigable stream called Clearwater! Coal shipments continued until 1865 when magnetic surveyors found workable coal seams elsewhere so mining ceased here entirely! In 1870s two large stores were built: one on Main Street corner with Third Street and one south of State Road 496 on Eagle Ford Road near where US Route 22 now intersects I-71. These stores became known as "'The Big Three'" because they accounted for almost all business activity within mile radius of them during this time period; other typical small businesses included a shoe store on Fourth Street corner with State Road 502 between Fourth and Fifth Streets (later renamed Jefferson Avenue), an insurance agency on State Road 504 east of I-71 between Elmira Boulevard and Clinton Avenue (now part of Middletown Township), a grocery store northwest of downtown along Third Street between Elmira Boulevard and Clinton Avenue known as 'The Grapes', post office at Ninth Street east of I- 71 north side next to Dutch Reformed Church which opened October 15th,[1] druggists at Seventh or Eighth streets east off Erie Canal opposite Terminal Market[2], several churches including First Presbyterian[3],[4], Methodist Episcopal[5],[6],[7],[8],[9], Baptist church[10],[11] In 1890 prominent citizens petitioned Congress for approval to incorporate as a city under state law but no action was taken until 1899 when Cleveland businessman George Hennepin donated land adjacent to what is now Downtown Cleveland for its incorporation into City Hall! On December 1st 1893 City Hall opened with Mayor Tilton serving as mayor pro tempore.[12][13] On May 3rd 1896 Mayor Tom Sawyer resigned due to ill health leaving Councilwoman Jennie Laughlin as acting mayor until July 5th when she too resigned effective that date due to term limits set by law! On November 30th 1897 vote took place offering Assistant Commissioners Josephine Germanotta Shields Ormsby Feely[14]- both women - instead of Mayor Tom Sawyer who accepted!! And so City Manager George Waring took office becoming first woman ever appointed To This Day!!! On January 1st 1901 the newly formed Cleveland Municipal League merged into City Hall with Mayor Jane Addams serving concurrently through 1903!!! ladies toilets open January 1st 1898!!!!
Sylvia was founded in 1811 as a small town in the extreme southeastern corner of Ohio. It rapidly grew, becoming one of the largest settlements in that region. In 1826, Sylvania became a county seat and it has continued to grow ever since. The population reached over 90,000 by 1920 and peaked at more than 150,000 by 1970. Today, Sylvania is an important center for trade and commerce within the region. The area is also home to several colleges and universities, including Case Western Reserve University and US Military Academy West Point.
