The name "Sylvania" comes from English General James Sullivan's column called "A Journey into Canada" which sailed downriver from British America in 1779, providing food for American troops during the French and Indian War (1754-63). After reaching Toronto, Canada on October 25th, 1779, General Sullivan's force continued its journey upriver until they reached what is now Sylvania on November 10th at nightfall after spending six days sailing through rapids and dangerous waters. The first settler in Sylvania was Nicholas Gage who arrived in 1814 with his family from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania then moved to Toledo where he started an tannery before coming to Sylvania to open a grocery store in 1827 with his brother John Gage Sr.. In 1830 Nicholas' son John Jr., along with his wife Charlotte built a gristmill that still stands today across from City Hall; this milling business was later renamed Chatham Mill Company after their grandson Charles Chatham became president of United States National Grains Corporation (USNGC) in 1927 having bought out his father's interest two years earlier. In 1836 local resident Elijah Hicks erected a log cabin near what is now Third Street Market before moving into town full time about one year later when he organized the first Township Committee meeting attended by thirty residents under the presidency of Daniel Boone who had recently returned from Kentucky pursuing trade opportunities there after becoming successful exporting coal and other minerals overland through Transcaucasia Trading Post (now known as Eastern Kentucky University). A few weeks later on December 11th Elijah erected a larger frame building next door toinitially used for storage but soon thereafter became known as the Hotel de la Salle where popular tourist attractions such as ice cream parlors were located throughout its heyday beginning in 1915 until it closed its doors for good following World War II due to wartime competition from nearby Dayton’s KFC drive thru restaurant which served everythingfrom hot dogsand hamburgersto pizzaand Pasta Alfredo etc... One contributing factor behind Hotel de la Salle’s closure may have been its inability to compete with new restaurants opening up around town serving faster food without needing an hour wait times like KFC did... Hicks died suddenly at age seventy-six while attending a ball game at Municipal Stadium leaving behind three children plus posthumous grandchildren: Willis Wirtz Hicks Sr., Willis Wirtz Hicks Jr., & Lillie Mae Hicks Vaught all residing within blocks of each other atop their parents home on Superior Avenue until their families left town when Titcomb County purchased their land shortly thereafter making them primary residents once again...During World War II many people living inside of City Limits worked various factories producing munitions such as aluminum cans & fighter planes while others lived outside working farms supplying meat products like bacon etc...Today most people within walking distance either enjoy shopping at Tom Ford or getting help hauling groceries home via carpool or bike ride

Sylvania is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,682 at the 2000 census. Sylvania is the only incorporated settlement in Muskingum County. The community of Sylvania was founded on July 17, 1811 by Captain John H. Slocum and his family as a trading post on the Scioto River. It became a town on February 14, 1836, when it annexed the adjacent village of Mount Lebanon. On March 15, 1868, Sylvania merged with neighboring village of Mount Lebanon to form one larger municipality. The first settler in Sylvania was Capt. John H Slocum who arrived from Connecticut about 1800 and built a log cabin on what is now State Road 3 east of where the current courthouse stands today. He also built a house which still stands today at 6th Street and Center Avenue. In 1811 Capt Slocum sent his son Peter to purchase land from Samuel Brown for $100 dollars so that he could start an agricultural enterprise there which would eventually grow into what is now Muskingum County. That same year Capt John's wife Elizabeth gave birth to their only child Polly who would later marry Drury Posthumus (1792-1866) and together they would father many children including James M., Abram C., Nancie J., Ahasuerus P., Anna A., David F.#Moses Whetstone (#Whetstone), Sylvester S.#Harrison Eager/#Eager #Cyrus Woodward (1834-1915), Alfred L.#Lincoln Woodbury (1856-1928), Franklin D.(Woodbury) & Elizabethe Blevins (1858-1940). In 1836 when Sylvania became a town it annexed the adjacent village of Mount Lebanon which had been founded by Isaac Newton Pease about two years earlier along with three other villages: Westville Township, East Liverpool Township and Huntingdon Township formed from parts of Lucas County under Act No 2 of 1830 . Westville Township was disbanded in 1840 while East Liverpool Township continued until it too disbanded in 1850 . Huntingdon township did not exist as an entity until its creation as part of new Sandusky County in 1861 In 1870 when Mahoning Valley Railroad began construction through MuskingUM county all but one township - Huntingdon - were included within the railroad company boundaries until they were reorganized into Sylvania townships effective January 1st 1870 By 1880 there were over 12500 residents living in 9 different communities within Muskinguum county with 4200 residents living in Sidney alone When statehood occurred in Ohio on November 16th 1881 all but one township - Sidney - were added to Ashtabula County becoming Mahoning Valleytownships effective December 1st Finally upon its incorporation intoMuskingumaCounty government on May 20th 1888 all but one township - Sidney - reverted back to their original status as Sylvanian townships
