Bauer’s cabin served as a stopping point for travelers going from Cincinnati to Cleveland. In 1811, Hungarian immigrants arrived in Sylvania and began trade with the natives. one of these traders, János Zápolya, built a cabin on what is now Elm Street. Zápolya’s cabin served as a stopover for travelers going from Cleveland to Toledo. On May 12, 1814, a post office called "Sylvania" was established at the intersection of State Routes 6 and 21; it operated until December 8th, 1816. By 1830 there were over fifty residences in town with a total population of 1,500 people In 1837-38 certain millers living near Xenia began to build a gristmill on Sycamore Creek which they named "Nelson's Mill". This mill continued operation until about 1850 when it burned due to lack of maintenance The construction during World War II (1939-1945) of Major General John Lattimore's Army Ammunition Plant (AIWP) at nearby Paintsville led to increased demand for local goods and services throughout the area including production at Nelson's Mill which ceased operations in 1945 A new shopping mall called "Mall City" opened in downtown Sylvania in 2001 adjacent to then-existing H&M department store providing retail space for over 1 million consumers The current mayor is Democrat Dave Hogan with terms expiring on November 3rd 2020

This shopping center served as both an important commercial district for downtown Sylvania and also helped stimulate growth within the community overall. Additionally, during this time frame several other important landmarks were constructed such as a high school (now called Eastman School) and two churches – First Baptist Church in 1925 and Second Presbyterian Church in 1951). During World War II, much activity took place within Sylvania thanks to its strategic location midway between Cleveland and Columbus - specifically along I-480 corridor which facilitated rapid wartime production efforts throughout central Ohio Valley region Volkswagen plants across Greater Dayton area In 1945-1946 all four plants were closed due to war effort shortages but reopened shortly thereafter after cessation of hostilities By 1957 all five plants had closed again but reopened under new management
