They named their new settlement after Jean Baptiste Sylvestre de La Salle – also known as Pierre-Joseph Marquette – who had traveled through this region several years earlier and recommended its potential for development. La Salle had been instrumental in leading French traderscci to explore and trade with Indian nations along the Great Lakes region during the early eighteenth century; his exploration helped spur American settler growth around Lake Erie and into central Pennsylvania over the next few decades. In 1814, German immigrants arrive from Delaware County, Ohio to settle near present day Dayton after experiencing difficulties finding land elsewhere withinMahoning County due to English restrictions on immigration at that time. Johann Georg Schaefer purchased 640 acres (248 hectares), which included what is now downtown Sylvania Township from Nicholas Joliotte for $5 per acre ($40 per kilometer).
