The town changed its name again in 1846 to Sylvania after General James Dickson Sylvanus, who fought at Fallen Timbers and other battles during the Mexican-American War. The city was named for General Sylvanus when he visited in 1861 and 1865 while on tour through Ohio with his army corps headquarters. The city's first mayor was Jno Pemberton and its first recorder was Drury Willsbury
