Sylvania, Ohio is the birthplace of the first gun-toting American settler in what is now Ohio. The town was founded by James K. Polk in 1836 as a small agricultural community on the Scioto River. It grew rapidly thereafter, becoming an important rail and shipping center, and soon became known as "The Gun Town of the Western World." In 1865, Sylvania became an incorporated city and its Guthrie Hotel became one of America's most popular tourist destinations. In 1923, Sylvania hosted the world's first international air show at its municipal airport. The event was headlined by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and featured such luminaries as gangsters Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. By the early 21st century, however,sylvanian gun culture had largely faded away; however, some remnants of it can still be seen today in local shooting ranges, Second Amendment groups throughout the area (particularly around downtown Sylvania), and various NRA-affiliated museums throughout the Buckeye State.
Sylvania, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. Sylvania is located on the Tiffin River in central Ohio and it is bordered by Youngstown to the north, Warren to the east, Cuyahoga Falls to the south, and Akron to the west. The history of Sylvania goes back more than two centuries. In 1812, General David Putnam built a log cabin on what is now known as Harrison Street in present-day Sylvania after his military victory over Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers. Sylvania was platted in 1822 by John Edwards, who named it for General James Henshaw Gilbert (1759-1825), one of his commanders during America's War for Independence. In 1830, George Stephenson built a flour mill on what is now High Street in present-day Sylvania after he won an engineering competition sponsored by Senator Nicholas Murray Butler (1800-1874). The town grew rapidly from its early years with many small businesses starting up around this time such as sawmills, grist mills and wagon shops; however, there were few homes built until about 1840 when construction began on several large homes including ones that still stand today on State Road 23 near High School. By 1850, there were more than 100 residents living in townships that made up modern dayLucas County; but due to flooding caused by heavy rains in 1892–93 which destroyed much of downtown Lucanville,[2] Sylvania declined significantly for many years until development began again around 2000 along High Street near University Circle; this has led to significant revitalization efforts over the past few decades which are continuing into today with new restaurants and nightlife options being opened or planned throughout downtown area as well as new housing developments being constructed across from University Circle providing increased access to jobs and services within walking distance while also preserving some of its historicene

Sylvania is a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Sylvania is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Sylvania Township was Captain John Cook in 1788. The town was platted on June 1, 1821 by commissioners from this township and Lucas County. A post office called Sylvania was established in 1825, and remained in operation until 1942. In 1837, James Ketchum discovered oil fields near Sylvania and decided to drill for oil there. Ketchum purchased 640 acres of land around the well site from George Washington Burnett for $4 per acre. In 1840, Ketchum began production at his well site with his natural gasoil lamps which he powered with horse power; these lamps were very successful and attracted large crowds to see them during the day and night while touring the local area. In 1851, Jens Jensen started an independent tannery that became one of the largest tanneries in eastern Ohio; it operated until 1922 when it merged into International Harvester Company's Toledo tannery division. In 1863 Jameson founded the Sylvania Savings Bank which remains active today as a community bank subsidiary of First Niagara Financial Corporation (FNF). By 1870 over 25% of all agricultural products grown in Mahoning County were produced here; this success led to development of major industries such as meatpacking and chemical production during the early 20th century including Consolidated Edison's (CE) Paper Mill & Refinery Complex on Canfield Avenue from 1902-1914 and GEICO's Dayton branch from 1924-1929 among others. During World War II several hundred people worked at Peabody Coal Mine No.; this mine closed after 1945 but left a legacy of tourism that continues today along Route 9A right outside town limits known as "Peabody Park". This park features interpretive panels about Peabody Coal Mine No.; excerpts include: "From its origins as a small coal mine to its present location within State Route 9A just outside town limits - Peabody Coal Mine No.- has had a significant impact onsylvanian history." Also located inside Peabody Park are three replica mines dating back to 1865 which depict various stages of coal mining including one where workers used hoes instead of tools to break up coal seams; these mines are open daily for tours starting at 9am unless noted otherwise below!
Sylvania, Ohio was founded on November 3, 1814 by the Ross family. The town was named in honor of General John C.Ross who had led the American forces during the Mexican War and who helped to establish a government in Mexico City. Sylvania soon became a center for trade and industry, with lumber being one of its most important exports. The population grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching over 10,000 by 1830. In 1849, Sylvania formed an alliance with neighboring townships to form the Town of Mahoning Valley. By 1860, Sylvania had become a city and continued to grow quickly until it reached its peak growth in the early 20th century. However, during World War II Sylvania experienced significant destruction as part of the war effort; its downtown area was severely damaged and many buildings were destroyed or abandoned. Since then, it has slowly updated and recovered from its past damage while continuing to serve as a vibrant community today.
