In 1825, David Wilkinson settled at an intersection where Sixth Avenue and Center Street now stand; he named it Wilkinson's Corner because he had land grant from General George Washington Wilkinson that covered most of present-day Sylvania Township'. The town declined rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to immigration restrictions and heavy manufacturing forces within local agricultural communities throughout Ohio; although Sylvania remained prosperous through the years, its population shrank to 1,000 by 1860. However, there was sporadic growth from 1870 onwards until Sylvania's incorporation as a village in 1908. The decline continued until World War II brought about increased industrial activity within nearby Cleveland and other parts of the Midwest; however,sylvanian villages such as Sylvania experienced significant declines thereafter until their incorporation into larger towns or cities in the postwar period.
