Struthers, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The community is located on the Scioto River and straddles the border of Muskingum and Trumbull Counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,711. It lies adjacent to the town of Struthers proper and west of its sister town of North Struthers. The name "Struthers" was first applied to a location on the Scioto River in 1792 by George Washington when he surveyed what is now Muskingum County for his military expedition against Great Britain. In 1802 David Roebuck donated land for a Methodist church near what is nowStruthers Elementary School. By 1825 there were six churches in this area with a total membership of 100 plus lay members. A post office called Struthers was established at this location on July 8, 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1896 John Fenton erected a log cabin as headquarters for his iron business at what is now known as Fenton's Ford Road east of Strutan's Store where he later built another store and house also known as Fenton's Ford House Museum (now part of Strutan's Store). This structure still stands today approximately one mile east-northeast from its original site on present day Powell Hill Road about two miles northwest from downtown Strutan’s Store along present day US Highway 62 (Lennon Road). From here until 1912 Samuel Southerland ran an sawmill which produced lumber from red cedar trees shipped downriver from Canada via the Erie Canal. A post office called North Struthers was established at this location on December 12, 1911; it continued operation until it was discontinued in 1951. The community has no recorded history before that date. In 1922 Amasa Purdy built his farmstead northeast of North Strutchers on present day Lennon Road between US Highways 62/Lennon Roads about one mile southeast from downtown North Strutterers village limits which are now part of Mansfield Township . He became self-employed exporting cornmeal to Cleveland through canals early in his life while living nearby at 6055 Lennon Rd., according to oral histories collected by Steeve Herndon during World War II . Purdy had become interested in American folk art music after seeing an exhibit featuring pioneer ballad singer Woody Guthrie at Cleveland State University . He organized a series or concerts beginning February 15th each year around World War I veteran Day based upon traditional songs popularized by Woody Guthrie featuring modern notation adapted by himself performed unaccompanied with steel guitar accompaniment under duets with other singers covering various patriotic topics including “My Countrymen” & “When We March In” among others...Purdy sold all his property but 3 acres next door to him within 10 years due to strategic flooding caused by heavy rains followed by freezes during winter resulting mostly in low rice yields leading him back into farming again After many years return he quit farming altogether went into insurance then retired bought 150 acre piece across road form Trumbull coowned w/struthers

In 1812, Nicholas Strutter married Anna Maria Fenton. They had two children: John and Anna Maria. John married Catherine Einarson in 1836 and they had four children: AnnaMaria (1838-1912),John Jr., Charles (1840-1924), and Nettie (1843-1925). AnnaMaria died at age seventy-six while pregnant with her fifth child; Charles died at age one year old. Nettie married George Hanks on December 2, 1847 in Union Township; they had one son: George Hanks Sr. AnnaMaria's death prompted Nicholas to sell the mill property to the townships of Union and Ottawa for $2,500 on November 9, 1912. On October 12th of that year, he moved from his home nearStrutterville into an old log cabin which is now known as "The Log House" within strutherstown Pioneer Square

In 1821, the Ohio General Assembly granted a land grant of 3 acres to Dr. John Hennepin for his studies at the University of Michigan. When Struther learned that Hennepin planned to build a school in the town, he donated land to make way for it. The first settler inStruthers was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1825. The town grew quickly thanks to its location and infrastructure including a post office, library, jail and meeting hall. By 1830, the population had reached 100 residents. In 1836, Struther voted to become part of the new United States because he felt that Great Britain was too dominant on the continent. He helped found what is now Cleveland as well as later Toledo and Youngstown while living inStruthers. In 1840,STRUTHERS TOWN IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE was formed with JAMES STRUTHERS AS ISSUER TO IMPLEMENT DIRECTIONS WHICH PROVIDE FOR THE MAKING OF NECESSARY ACCOUNTS AND BUILDINGS IN STRUTHSVILLE FOR PUBLIC USE."
