Some of these pioneers were John Aiken, who built the first home in Struthers; Isaac White, who began trading goods in Struthers; and James Fenton, who opened a post office in Struthers in 1855. In 1857, two brothers named McMillin moved from Kentucky to start a grocery store in Struthers. This started the commercial industry inStruthers and other nearby rural communities that would continue until World War II. In 1960, the town name was changed to honor General George Washington Irving (1797-1848). At that time, many of the original settlers had died or moved away and most of what remains today is due to immigration during this time period: many German immigrants settled here while others came from Canada and Italy. Struthers was a small town in the county of Stark, in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Struthers had a post office from 1838 until 1865, when it was discontinued due to population growth in neighboring Toledo. The first settler at Struthers was John Strother, who arrived in 1837. He built a log cabin on the present site of Struthersville. In 1840, he married Sara Maynard and they started a family. They were dismayed to find that there wasn't enough water to irrigate their crops so they turned to mining for water supplies. They also became involved with lumbering because they found that logs could be moved by wagonloads more quickly than any other type of cargo. Around 1850, John Strother erected a mill on the current site of Struthersville; this is now known as Strother's Mill Park. The strothers operated their mill until 1862, when it came under ownership of the Morelli family. In 1865, the post office closed due to population growth and replaced by an office at Toledo which continued until 1919.
