Struthers, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The Struthers post office was established in 1827, and closed in 1902. They were named for Captain John Struther, an early settler and a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1793 to 1800. He also served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1806 to 1807 and as a delegate to the First Congregationalist Congress in 1795-96. The first store in Struthers opened on December 20, 1830, by George & Amos Wise under the name "Newport." In 1831 Reverend David Hogg purchased land at corner of High Street and Main Street for $1,500; he built a house there which became known as "Struther's Grove". In 1840 James White erected an addition to his house at this site that now houses Struther's Bank; it was one of several commercial buildings erected around this time along High Street. The village rapid growth during the 1840s led to its incorporation as a townsite on February 3, 1846 with a population of 350 residents (the number increased rapidly when railroads arrived and began serving Struthers). In 1860 Moses Taylor founded what is now called Central Avenue Baptist Church while living in Dayton; he moved his congregation here after finding success preaching among local farmers and working with new churches organized by Central Avenue Presbyterian Church in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania near Cincinnati where he had earlier been pastor (Central Avenue became one long street running through downtownStrutterers). When Taylor died in 1865 his wife continued leading Central Avenue until her death four years later; she was buried at strutherstown Methodist Episcopal Cemetery there with himometime before her death date unknown but probably between 1865-1868 due to its proximity to their home cemetery.). 'Moses Taylor Elementary School' stands today on what once housed Central Avenue Baptist Church across from 'Moses Taylor Boulevard'. On January 8th 1925 Drury Hall School moved into their present location behind Sears Department Store (now Macy's) on State Route 422 just north of Center Road/Route 422 intersection - 'Drury Hall' still stands today! Mrs Ethel Gainer taught music classes at Drury Hall which are still offered today until 4 pm.; her daughter Mrs Ella Post also taught music classes up until her retirement effective September 15th 2018 In 1951struths experienced its largest flood since records began when water levels reached above average following heavy rains upstream from Posey Dam - many homes were destroyed or damaged including: Elijah Cavanaugh’s millrace powered sawmill which stood until 1947 within sight of New London Common just east of town limits & supplied water for over 100 dwellings (& adjacent farms), schoolhouse & cotton gin(s),[2][3] grocery store & dry goods store then Ohiopyle Mill [4]
