Struthers is a small town in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. It was founded by English settlers in 1795 and has been part of the United States since 1830. The population was 3,693 as of the 2010 census. Struthers is located on the Scioto River just south of downtown Cincinnati. The first settler in what is now Struthers was John Hargrave, who arrived there in 1795 with his family and some friends. He named his new farm "Strutherstown" after one of his brothers who had settled near Morgantown, West Virginia earlier that year. From this farm, Hargrave and his descendants began to trade goods with other farmers and traders along the Scioto River. By 1811, they had purchased an additional piece of land west of their original holdings to form what is now Struthers Township. One early resident of Struthers was James Whitehurst, who arrived there in 1812 as part of a group led by Colonel Anthony Wayne during the War for Independence. Afterward, Whitehurst built a cabin near present-day College Lane for himself and his wife Sarah Jane (née Boyd). He also built a barn and mill on nearby Mill Creek which he used until 1826 when he sold it to John Biddlecombe Sr.. This mill continued production until 1970 when it was destroyed by fire . After mills closed throughout much of Ohio during the 19th century due to technological advances, Struthers became an important center for agricultural production . In 1865, local entrepreneur Lewis Stephenson developed a new type of cotton gin atstrutherstown which helped stimulate economic growth in the community . In 1902–1903, A & W Brewing Company operated a brewery here which helped make StrUTHSIrVALLAmt one of America's leading microbreweries . In 2007–2008 work commenced on renovating both Bridge Street Baptist Church (now First Presbyterian) and Old Main Schoolhouse (now American Legion Post 9) into modern day historic buildings while preserving their historical significance .. These renovations were completed during 2009-2010 season without any damage or loss to either structure .)
