By 1860, they had four children: Pheobe (1858-1902), Edwin (1860-1937), Mary Jane (1862-1945) and John Edward (1864-1950). One of their daughters married George Washington Carden in 1886. John Edward hand died at age 80 in 1950 and is buried with his wife and two daughters at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Pheobe Hand continued running the grocery store until 1902 when she sold it to her sister Emma Barnes. Emma ran it until 1960 when it was acquired by Mrs. Alice Fenton who donated it to the local history museum in 1978.

The town was founded in 1825 by Capt. Benjamin Struthers and his family from nearby Sandusky. The original name for the town was "Plymouth." In 1827, Captain Struthers donated land to build a school and church in what is now Struthers. The first settler to arrive in Struthers was John Hunsaker on December 1, 1827. In 1830, Captain Struthers married Lydia Silliman and they started a home farm which produced corn, beans and potatoes until she died in 1865. Their son Benjamin became captain of the local militia in 1845 and later served as justice of the peace for Trumbull County In 1861, when Ohio seceded from United States government control following the American Civil War, Captain Benjamin Struthers moved his family to Lebanon Township in western Harrison County where he continued farming until his death on October 15th 1863 at age 80 years old due to pneumonia contracted while working near Portsmouth, Indiana On May 10th 1913 local citizens organized an election precinct watch committee with J G White as chairperson with Mrs F H Hitchcock treasurer This committee successfully thwarted an attempt by prohibitionists to organize an electioneering campaign against William Condon who had been running as an Independent candidate In 1920 George W Hawkins became president pro tem of Trumbull county board of commissioners and membership on this body increased from 5 to 12 after he won re-election as president pro tem with over 90% of all ballots cast On November 3rd 1930 President Harry S Truman announced that Cleveland had become Grover Cleveland's final resting place . Shortly afterwards Mrs A L Harding became Honorary Treasurer Emeritus

In 1816, John's son George Struther moved to Struthers and took over management of the home farm which he had inherited from his father. In 1821, George married Fannie Green (1807-1892), daughter of Simon Green who founded Green County in 1796. They raised four children: Fannie (baptized December 12, 1821; died February 9, 1893), John (December 12, 1824 – May 15, 1870), Fanny (baptized January 10, 1830; died October 3rd 1889), and Amanda (October 3rd 1830 – July 6th 1907). John Pyle bought some property adjoining Strutterers about two miles westward in 1825 and began making improvements to it into what became known as Pyle Heights.
