The name "Struthers" is derived from the English word strut (a type of platform or stand), and refers to a horse that was used for wagons and other transportation during early nineteenth century America. The first settler in Struthers Township were two families who came to this area in 1802 from Easton, Pennsylvania. They named their land Struthers Township after John Struther, an Englishman who had settled in that area some years before. One of the first businesses in Struthers was a store operated by Ebenezer Chapman which opened on July 1, 1805. By 1830, there were 9 stores and 10 shops in Struthers township with a total population of over 150 people. One of the most important events that took place instruments with the founding of Strutsls town was when Drury Hargrave donated his farmstead on Main Street near where modern day State Route 422 crosses it for use as a schoolhouse and post office. This donation made possible the establishment of a school district which included much of what is now Medina County including present day Struttersville One reason why strutsville started off so slowly may have been because there wasn't enough capital available to start many businesses at that time In 1848, George Washington Carver donated land along State Route 422 east of present daystruttersville forthe establishment of Carver Institute which would later become University Park In 1850, James Wickersham donated land northeast cornerofStateRoute422and US 36 forthe establishment of Wickersham Agricultural College In 1865 Drury Hargrave donated another piece o'land to make way for Griggs Road today's state route 422 . This event helped seed what would become oneof Medina county's most significant economic development periods

In 1824,STRUTHERS VILLAGE graced the pages of history when it became one of the towns formed from parts of four other towns in Union County by order of Governor Josiah Cuyahoga as part of his "New Order". STRUTHERS VILLAGE had a population of only 100 people when it joined forces with WASHINGTONVILLE (now Elizabethton), PORTLAND (now Lebanon), and ONION VALLEY (now Byron) to form what would become known as STRUTHS COUNTY during its early years. The community soon grew and developed several businesses including groceries, lumber yards, cotton gins, and a post office which opened on November 5th, 1826 under the name "Struttersville." By 1830 there were also three churches - one Baptist, one Presbyterian, and one Methodist - all operated out-of-home services providing religious education for local children until replaced by public schools around 1860 or so.
Struthers, Ohio was originally organized as a township in 1814. It was renamed Struthers Township in 1825, and then Struthers Township again in 1849. The township became a village in 1901.
