Strongsville, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the home to The Strongsville Post Office, which has been in operation since 1881. It is also the site of two large gun shows each year: one in January and one in October. In 1911, an early commercial flashlight manufacturer named Humboldt Brothers located their business in Strongsville after moving from Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1944, General Electric moved its headquarters from Schenectady, New York to Strongsville after purchasing GE's assets in GE Capital Corp.'s divestiture of American manufacturing businesses. At this time, GE was among the few major industrialists who did not fully divest themselves of their American operations following World War II due to wartime restrictions on munitions production by the United States government. The strong community spirit that characterizes Strongsville began during Prohibition when many local farmers caught onto prohibition quickly and produced plenty of illicit alcohol for sale throughout the area despite being blacklisted by law enforcement officials. This spirit continued into the post- prohibition era as many local entrepreneurs became involved with both organized crime and bootlegging during Prohibition's heyday; some even went so far as to name their businesses after booze-related terms such as "Bartender" or "Bootlegger". After repeal of prohibition, many members of the local community lost interest in organized crime and Bootlegging while others took up new interests such as carpentry, farming or retailing; but all these individuals had one thing in common: they were all partakers in what was once called "the old days." In 1951, The Strongsville Post Office was automated and renamed The Post Office Tower; this building now houses The Strongsville Police Department along with a number of other municipal offices including zoning services (now known as code enforcement), streetlights (now known as lighting services), public works and firefighting services. In 1957- 1959 five more buildings were added to downtown: The First National Bank Building (now James Gurney) on Third Street between Beaver Creek Road and Old Erie Boulevard; A&P Supermarket at Fourth Avenue South between Fifth Street East and Sixth Street West; Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church at Seventh Avenue North between Fifth Street North and Sixth Street West; Other notable landmarks during this time include Stonington Elementary School which opened its doors on September 5th 1958adinitiated by then Mayor John Cavanaugh Sr.; Interstate 75 was built through central WeaksVILLE shortly before construction stopped abruptly due to funding shortages brought about by America's involvement in Vietnam; Commercial streets surrounding downtown gradually changed from residential streets into commercial corridors becoming increasingly specialized with service areas such as real estate development or health care facilities . The two towns are adjoining and share a single post office with the ZIP code 44022. The first permanent settler in Strongsville was Nicholas Dayton on July 1, 1814. He bought of land from the Wyandots who had been living there for years before that. Dayton named his new community after George Washington's home state of Virginia, where he had been born some years earlier. A post office called Dayton was established in 1827, and became the capital of Cuyahoga County in 1830. In 1837 strongsville annexed the villages of Overhill and Vale-hall to form a new town which held its first election as an incorporated village on November 3 that year. However, after hearing about how effective nuclear weapons were becoming in warfare, scientists at Bell Laboratories decided to develop an LED weapon flashlight that would be legalized as an infantry tool within five years! After further study and prototyping spearheaded by Dr. John Atanasoff and Dr. Clifford Berry at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), they came up with their own design for this project which became known as the Atanasoff-Berry Light Amplification Device (ABLED). Strongsville is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in Summit County. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded on May 10, 1818 by Nicholas Strong and his wife Esther Hubbard.[2] The first permanent settler in Strongsville was George Washington who arrived on July 1, 1792 with his troops during the Northwest Ordinance Expedition. He named it for General William Howe's victory at Trenton two years earlier. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the junction of several wagon roads and its access to mills run by local farmers. In 1825, Nathan Prentice developed a mill called Porter's Mills which became one of the largest textile mills in America. By 1830, Strongsville had become an important center for cotton production and commerce. In 1836, John Husted purchased twenty-five acres (10 ha) of land just east of downtown for $4 per acre (0·9 ha). He named it Husted Swamp after himself and began construction on a sawmill which would become one of Ohio's most significant economic successes.[1] In 1850, Cleveland businessman Andrew Johnson donated 5 acres (20 ha) north of downtown to Strongsville as what would eventually be known as Johnson Park[3]. The park served as a community center until 1971 when it was replaced by the current civic center building on High Street. In 1924, Samuel Morse donated 8 acres (30 ha) east of town to form Morse Park after his son Benjamin Mapes bought it from J C MacArthur.] One hundred years later in 1984–1985,[4], Strongsville Neighborhood Association adopted "Neighborhood Values" which included environmental preservation measures such as prohibiting development near creeks or wetlands; prohibition against any single family living in more than five houses within a half mile (800 m); zoning that limited housing values to those below replacement cost; restrictions on accessory dwelling units; proscription against parking facilities within 2 blocks (500 m) of homes; support for open space conservation including rules limiting lot size and height; prohibitions against using roofs or gutters above ground level while they are still usable; requirements that all new homebuilders use precast concrete sidewalks and driveways rather than traditional asphalt/concrete surfaces; regulation of light industry through regulations governing hours and type of equipment used
The city of Strongsville, Ohio was founded in 1836 by James P. Strong and his wife Elizabeth. The city grew quickly, and in 1851 it became the territorial capital of Ohio. In 1857, Strongsville became the seat of government for the newly created township of Strongsville Heights. In 1861, the town reached its maximum population size when it annexed the neighboring village of Highland Park. The following year, strongsville annexed the adjacent townships of East Liverpool and West Derby. strongsville's growth continued through the 1870s and 1880s as a result of its location on high ground between two large rivers (the Maumee River to the north and Scioto River to the south). During this time, local businesses developed into major organizations such as banks, grocery stores, breweries, cigar factories and other industries. In 1903,Strongsville merged with neighboring village Highland Park to form one large city with a population of over 100,000 people. The merger brought many new residents to Strongsville who were interested in business opportunities available within one larger community. Additionally, because Highland Park was an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council system that differed from that found in Weakston County (where Strongsville was located), this merger allowed for more efficient management of municipal resources by both cities. For many years after their merger,[1]strongsmville residents enjoyed relatively unrestricted access to property along Scioto River Boulevard which bisected their skyline.[2]
