Strongsville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark County. The population was 100,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Cuyahoga-Massillon Metropolitan Statistical Area. Strongsville was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Young and named for General James Strong, who had destroyed an Indian village earlier that year in what is now Canton Township. The city was originally located on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Mahoning River. In 1824, land sale results in construction of what is now downtown Strongsville by order of Mayor John Pemberton on behalf of the town trustees. The first presidentially appointed mayoralty occurred in 1828 when John Sibley became Mayor after serving one term as a trustee. In 1830, then-Governor Andrew Jackson issued an executive order naming two commissioners to study ways to improve transportation between Cincinnati and Cleveland; these commissioners were Edward Gasser and Samuel Morse (the father of America's first telephone). Surveyors looked at various possibilities for a road between Strongsville and Cleveland but decided on building a canal route instead because it would be less expensive than buying land from Native Americans for development (see: Erie Canal). The first store opened in downtown Strongsville in 1830 by French immigrant Pierre L'Enfant under license from Governor Jackson himself – L'Enfant designed and built much of today's downtown including many important landmarks like City Hall and First National Bank Building which still stand today (just across Main Street from where US 12 meets I-71). At this time, there were very few public buildings north of Downtown Cincinnati due to fears that developed areas would compete with commercial interests for tax base & jobs! Erie Canal Construction began just east of downtown Weaksville on November 10th 1830 - just over 2 years after President Andrew Jackson honored his Executive Order! On January 15th 1834, construction finally ended when they reached their final destination - just west of present day State Route 271/I- 71! This marks one such significant milestone during early American History as local building permit issuance continued up until well into the 20th century! With only about 4 miles remaining to be surveyed & laid out along original routing - engineers estimated that work could have been finished MUCH sooner if not for some unforeseen problems caused by severe winter weather conditions... however, strong business & political support led to completion even faster than expected! By September 3rd 1836 all layering had been completed including deep water navigation improvements necessary for river traffic!! This feat was truly groundbreaking given that prior to this date both rivers had been littoral & used primarily for agricultural purposes!! Today you can see evidence all along both Rivers mile long waterfront areas excavated during canal construction back then as well as remnants left behind OF THAT IMPORTANT DIVISION OF THE WATER REEF called "CANAL ZOO" which NEVER WAS CONSTRUCTED!!! During late 19th century growth many new businesses flamed up around downtown area creating high demand for space (& increased competition) - resulting in many demolitions over time !! However, recent trends indicate an overall renaissance happening Downtown currently with more pedestrians using sidewalks insteadof streetcars

He laid out a town site on high ground near where he now lives and named it after his friend and neighbor Colonel John Niles. A post office was established in 1821 in Weaksville with Jno. Hinton as its first director. In 1827, strongsville becamethe county seat of Trumbull County after that county was created from parts of Perry and Clinton counties. In 1834, strongsville received a charter from State legislatures making it an incorporated village with full powers granted under Ohio law. On December 22nd 1865 while serving as major general commanding Ulysses S Grant's Union forces at Vicksburg, MississippiGeneral Ulysses S Grant collapsed and died from natural causes at age 60 years 5 months while leading his army against Confederate Generals Robert Ewell (5th VC), Joseph Johnston (3rd NC)and James Longstreet (4th VA). His body lay unburied until November 1865 when arrangements were made for him to be moved from Jackson parish military cemetery near Memphis Tennesseeto Oak Ridge Cemetery outside Knoxville Tennessee where he remains buried today along with over 1 million other Americans who lost their lives during World War II including more than 66% of all soldiers killed in action or missing in action throughout Europe-a distinction which continues to this day...
