Gun targets have been a part of the Strongsville community since at least the 1800s. The first target was erected in 1801 on the current site of the Strongsville Community Center. One of the first gun ranges in Ohio was established in Strongsville in 1898 by Major John A. Gregg. At that time, gunnery schools were also operated out of town. In 1902, Mrs. Lucy White donated land for a public school and a shooting range was created on it, which remain to this day one of the most popular places to shoot in Strongsville. Today, there are more than 100 shooters who use the range each week. The Range Master is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and keeping everything operating as it should be. There are currently five lanes with 12 targets each, making it an extremely versatile facility for all types of shooters - from experienced veterans to newbies alike! Strongsville is a small town in theuy of Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Canton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Strongsville was Nicholas Sperling in 1824. The town was platted on November 12, 1826 by order of Governor John Cranch as part of the West Side Land Purchase and included land that now includes parts of Dayton and Middletown. The original name for Strongsville was "Firminstown." On February 10, 1829, a post office was established at Strongsville with Wm. Hahn as the first clerk and it held until 1870 when it changed to "Wilson". In 1830-31 Aaron Burr (the father of Vice President Alexander Hamilton) built a mill on an stream near present day Canal Road and River Street. Burr also donated land for a school in Strongsville which became known as Burr Schoolhouse later renamed Stroud School District High School after Mrs. Harriet Stroud who donated $10 000 to help build it In 1835-36 Anthony Wayne built a sawmill on Monongahela River adjacent to present day Canal Road/River Streetspiteadwest from where he derived his flour business until its closure in 1911 In 1840-41 David Brown located a gristmill on Canal Road east from present day Canal Road serving both strongsvilers and surrounding areas until its closure in 1902 He also erected two log homes near today's intersection of I-75 & US 21 known as Brown's House (now called Pioneer Homes)and Green's House respectively. In 1847 Captain John Fenton founded Fenton’s Brewery which served both strongsville residents and neighboring towns until its closure in 1916 . Captain Fenton also donated 3 acres (1 km²) northeast of town limits for use as future high school campus although no such development occurred . A post office operated at Strongsville from 1830 to 1870 but discontinued operations because Wilson had already been named so . A new post office opened at Strongsville on October 25th 1870 under the name "Wilson" after Colonel James Wilson who had served as superintendent of schools for Stark County during the late 19th century In 1892 local woman Lillie McGill organized Young Ladies' Aid Society which provides social services to women throughout Stark County including assistance with food shopping, laundry cleaning etc After Lillie McGill's death her society continued providing social services into the 21st century On July 6th 1899 Local resident Elijah Mead opened local grocery store named "Mead Store" along present day Canal Road/River Streets just south of I-75 exit ramps across from Meade Township Creamery descendants still operate store today according'to this date
